Ah yes, the good old civilization staple; fried dough. Along with the sword and soup

I never would have considered honey and pepper, but man do those look insane. Gotta try this now.

Black pepper on ANYTHING that has honey in or on it is SO underrated. The pepper cuts the sweetness down and brings out the honey flavor in a very complimentary way. It’s like the nephew of Salt and Vinegar

I love how humans throughout history have always craved a baked dough with a sweet glaze on it

This dish should have a place in modern cafe/donut shops

Instead of black peppercorns, consider using long pepper. The initial pepper heat is a tad stronger but quickly becomes sweet and floral.

This is very similar to a modern Greek dish we have called λουκουμάδες (Loukoumades), though loukoumades often will have chopped nuts on them as well. If you’re ever in Greece you can find them pretty much everywhere, I highly recommend

Look at those golden brown delights. How are these not snacks EVERYWHERE?

So in Italy we still eat a variation of this- strufoli

Usually for Christmas/ new years and always with colorful sprinkles! As a kid growing up, sneaking past the bowl and sticking your finger in there just to get a whole load of honey and sprinkles was always the best and it’s still a staple every year :)

My favourite medieval recipe is a middle eastern dish called barrad its a runnyish yeast batter drizzled into hit sesame seed oil then topped with a mix of honey and rosewater with a pinch of cardamon

Thank you!! I'm thrilled. These look like modern day Greek "Loukoumades". I always thought they were a Turkish origin. But it's nice to hear that they pre-date that.

Black pepper is so underrated for desserts. Try some on vanilla ice cream, it’s great

I have read parts of De Re Conquinaria. It is really interesting, there are also spiced wine or honey recipes if you're into that. (tmi: did it for a university paper, turns out the Romans used pepper, namely black pepper, A LOT)

In Egypt we have a similar desert called zalabia, the only difference is that it's shaped like a ball not a square, and sometimes people like to eat it with other sauces like chocolate, vanilla, etc

"I can eat like 30 of these in one sitting" has big "I can do a thousand now" energy

I love honey and pepper together. Especially the long pepper. Its how I've started eating my cornbread when I want it sweet.

Kinda like French toast sticks, but better because of the honey and pepper. Yum.

The appearance after it was fried resembled fried polenta (something a few restaurants in Brazil offer as a side dish). Not with hone, though. That looks tasty!

If you fry those in butter thats something we ate as kids. Fried semolina. I think its from my corsican side. And much nicer with browned butter.

We still make a very similar sweet dish in Sicily
