I think from this discussion I now understand Jen, it's like they don't like her and want her around but they want her things like her assistance at family events and here kids. so she must be a yes sir no sir person. In-laws just like using people for their benefit.

Zwai and Pinky are correct Xhosa culture does not allow a "Makoti" to participate in family conversations; she gets everything from the husband unless the family has agreed that she must attend the meeting, and you do not simply say anything in the meeting. Similarly, the spouse cannot participate in family talks unless he is requested to do so and the family agrees. Loyiso understands this, which is why he had to "ask" her to be a part of the talk; but, he did not consult with his other siblings beforehand, which is where the commotion is coming from. The problem is partly with the family for not teaching Zen enough on how things are done culturally. and uLoyiso should be the one educating uZen about Xhosa culture, but he is too centred on Christianity, so his wife will feel attacked all the time.
