World Record Giant Potato Attempt Epic Fail

One of the vegetables that I am growing this year as always is potatoes. But growing Giant potatoes let alone a world record potato is a huge commitment and not an easy task.

Along the way there are challenges and disappointments, In this episode of UK Here We Grow I show you one of my first attempts at a world record giant potato and I don't mind telling you it was an epic fail.

The current record is held by Peter Glazebrook and was grown in his garden at Halam, near Newark in Nottinghamshire. The Giant Potato weighed in at 11lb (4.99kg)

The previous record of 8lb 4oz (3.8kg) was also held by Mr Glazebrook, for the previous decade.

The great thing about having epic fails when trying to grow a world record potato is that each epic fail is a learning opportunity. It takes me one step closer to achieving my very own World Record.

I still have 6 more containers to empty which are still growing, so who knows, there may be a world record potato in one of those.

Wow that potato was huge, the other was a very nice size as well. I think your helper is so cute and a natural gardener.

Proves a point that removing as many spuds works, nicely done Tony.

From one tiny chit, you got big potatoes!!! I am amazed. I will try that Instead of planting a whole potato. Sweet assistant and cute. I thought the way you transplanted the potato from little pot to a bigger pot was interesting, never thought they would cope with being moved .starting them in little pots will enable us to grow some indoors on the window cill, thank you for sharing your wisdom.

Biggest potato I ever grew was a maincrop variety called Remarka, their season goes on into autumn and they're huge.

In the bottom left corner does that bucket of spuds have blight starting? I noticed the brown spots on the leaves which are tinted yellow in places similar to black spot on rose leaves. I found a leaf like that on my Maris Piper so i removed it, given all the wet mild weather we're having in the uk im keeping a close eye on them for blight

Any extra big potatoes I have grown (unintentionally) have gone soft in the middle as they were very watery. My pot grown potatoes grew well this year. I started them off in the greenhouse, the top growth was a little tender coping with the elements when they went outside. I only grew them as they were a raffle prize. The variety was Sharpes Express, nice looking potatoes but a little floury for earlies. Can anyone recommend a nice waxy early as the pot grown potatoes were a good clean crop and I would like to grow some next year. Good luck with your giant ambition Tony.

Nice of you to show what you consider a failure....although I would be happy to get those out of a bucket. Where these the same variety that you gave to Dan?

I'd be happy with those few big potatoes. How did the other 4 containers shape up? Any better? Hopefully they were. 👍🏻

Good learning curve and can't sometimes control growing conditions eg seasonal weather and unusual weather at that. Bet they taste good.

On the bright side you can have some nice jacket spuds for your dinner. Just wondering how long until you do the spuds in pots verse the spuds in the ground reveal.

Hi Tony I know you were trying for Giants but I wouldn't call those epic fails. They were big spuds particularly in the 2nd bucket. How is it possible to remove all the tiny potatoes do you have to remove the soil a number of times? Take care. Nick
