Per aspera ad astra: Ludwig van Beethoven, "the last eternal revolutionary" (Sir Donald Runnicles), worked for almost eleven years on his only opera: with FIDELIO, he transcended operatic conventions and, in an unusual plot and minimalist setting, tells of the existentiality of love, (female) civic courage and the possibility of the impossible.
