Owned and ran one for over 20 years and 2 million miles. And the steps still worked when I sold it to a collector.

There was man who lived near me that was a mechanic for McLeans Trucking company in Winston Salem NC. Back in the late 60's he was working on a cab over like this and for some reason the locking device failed when he was bent over the engine. It broke his back. He eventually was able to return to work but always had problems. In the early 70's he came to work for Murrow's trucking where I worked. Cab over trucks were all either of those two companies ran at that time. Instead of the exception they were the norm on the roads back then. We ran at first the old GMC "cracker box" tractors then the new GMC models in 72. The sleepers was nothing to brag about back then. Today's sleepers are like a hotel room on wheels.

COEs were so nice because you could put either a lot of sleeper behind you without making a crazy-long wheelbased tractor, or have a short wheelbase and sleeper for a tractor that was extremely maneuverable and also allowed you to haul longer trailers through length-restricted routes

30 plus years as a heavy truck mechanic and most of those years spent at the Freightliner dealership I can say that up here in Canada we spent a pile of time fixing them. Not knocking just saying that they didn't fair well in the winter with all the road salt. Still loving the old girls 😜👍🇨🇦🔧

I drove an argosy here in Australia melb Sydney b/double work .very comfortable truck to drive .big bunk .I liked it .

Owned a 1972 Frieghtshaker C.O.E back in 1987.
It was a 86in cab no power steering 225wb aluminum frame on springs. RTO 13sp with a 8V71T Detroit 4:11s 38k Rockwells. 350hp.
Every day before I started driving, I would slam the door on my hand just to put me in the mood😅😅😅

The first ones had problems with the swing out steps in winter time snow and ice build up they wouldn't swing out. This canover was a flat floor that was nice the early early models had a dog house that separated drivers seat and passenger seat and you had to crawl over it to the bunk and if you had change in your pockets of your pants in ended up in bed with you if you didn't take 'em off first, also they didn't have really any storage space in them as you do now in trucks for long haul driving.
Just a bit of history on the Cabover I'm retired driver drove 25yrs but have been around trucks working on them n heavy equipment for about 45yrs and know just lit bit about trucks even owned and drove my own for a bit. Ain't nothing like the smell of a cold start of a big truck in the morning smells like money and fun times left lane trucking passing everything but a fuel stop 😁👍👍👍👍🤣🤣🤣

Sigh...I thought the Argosy made a HELLUVA truck. I understand the problems with cabover; rough ride and potentially more chance of injury in a crash. But, running in the Northeast, the better maneuverability just made sense to me. Seeing how many vintage cabovers are still running today, I truly believe that there's a niche market here in the U.S. J
