The song bad religion’s meaning is actually quite simple to grasp when you factor in the title of the song, the lyrics and for the most part the general sense of the album. Bad religion is Frank Ocean’s critique on religion and it’s treatment of homosexual individuals. Frank Ocean is speaking of his struggles being a homosexual religious individual who has to hide so he doesn’t get judged by those around him, he references Jonestown with the cyanide in his styrofoam cup, in the sense he would die for God’s love and the love of those around him but God and the congregation would never love him in return because he gay, hence why he says “unrequited love is nothing but a one man cult” because you grow to worship someone or something that will never love you back, but you’re obsessed with their love it becomes a cult like following because you devote your life trying to prove you’re worthy but your worth is never valued. for everybody who doesn’t understand this song is from the perspective of frank talking to a taxi driver about his problems, in this song the repetition of “i can never make him love me” he is referring to the god that he is talking about in the song, him saying “don’t curse me” is him feeling invalidated and disrespected, don’t curse me also having the meaning of like don’t talk to me with that disrespect, like cursing. in this song frank is navigating the conflict between his sexuality and his religion. the use of “a one man cult” is him saying that he feels like he is worshiping and obsession over this god and asking for forgiveness and receiving nothing back. it’s a bad religion because he feels unaccepted and ashamed. hope this helped anyone trying to understand the song or anyone confused about the religious aspect of the song !! ❤️❤️❤️

I dont think he is insulting islam. He says its a bad religion to be in love with someone that could never love you...thats why he begins telling the taxy driver be my shrink for an hour. He is asking the Muslim driver for advice...he chooses the Muslim religion because we only bow down to Allah not to another human being. he’s not saying that Islam is a bad religion.
he’s saying that no matter the religion, people could never truly accept him the way he is.
