Can Argentines Speak English?

Hello everyone!

In this video, I will be going around different areas of Buenos Aires asking people a couple of questions about whether foreigners and tourists who come to the country need to speak even a little bit of Spanish or if they can get by in the city of Buenos Aires or in the country as a whole with just English.

I'm really glad because I got to talk to people from a few different backgrounds, whether they had been born in Buenos Aires or moved to the city from other provinces or even a lovely Russian couple who decided to make Argentina their home.

We also talk about whether Argentina is a good welcoming place for foreigners or not and whether they think people face discrimination here or not.

Overall, I am very excited about this one as I tried my best to get out of my comfort zone and give you something a little bit different from the content that you usually see from me and I hope you like it!

I hope you it helps if you're thinking about possibly coming to Buenos Aires.

As always I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments below and as always thank you for the support!

really enjoyed the street interviews and the varying opinions. I hope to visit Buenos Aires some day and seeing these interviews makes it seem very inviting. I agree with the Russian and American couples about making the effort to learn a bit of Spanish out of respect.

Loved this format, I really appreciated the different opinions of all the members of the public you interviewed. I love the breakdown you gave about their personalities and “arrogance” which I’m still learning for myself 2 years into a relationship with an Argentine here in the UK. He came here very much an Anglophile and I’m discovering more and more how much I love his country in return so thank you for your content Sabrina!

When I was about six years old, I visited Bariloche with my parents and encountered some tourists from Canada. Although I didn’t speak a word of English, I loved the way the language sounded, so I decided to study it. I believe that people in Argentina who claim to hate the language don't truly hate it. They simply don’t see any practical applications for it, especially since we live so far from the rest of the world. If you live in the south of the country in a small town, you rarely come across foreigners. Moreover, the younger generations have already forgotten about the war with the UK, so that isn’t a factor. Most Argentinians are shy and afraid of making fools of themselves by speaking a language poorly. It is a fear of failure. Learning English isn’t expensive nowadays, and it is a relatively easy language to learn. All you need is time, the willingness to learn, and an internet connection.

Hi, Sabrina!
Once again, you did a great job with this video. It was very interesting to hear both Argentinians and foreigners give their perspective on the necessity of speaking Spanish if deciding to visit or live there. I think you're totally right about it also depending on the area, and it's also 100% true that your ability to learn another language largely depends on how much money you have. I also liked your insights into the society as well.
Thanks for another great video--you are well on your way to making this your job. Honestly, I thought that you would be awesome at being a bilingual consultant for people who are looking to move to Buenos Aires. As someone who speaks both languages, and knows what it's like to be new to the country, your perspective is extremely unique.

The question is not because Argentines do not speak English, but because you do not speak Spanish, at least. Not to mention Castellano, which is what we Argentines speak, who are also Americans.

Can you get by without Spanish in a government office, filing documents? Or doing business, ordering products and arranging payment and contracts?

I would learn Spanish if I moved to Argentina. I speak a little. My wife is fluent.

I'm an old US citizen - intrigued by Argentina - know no Spanish but am curious about their 'culture' and attitude toward the US - given they seem to love our USD's ? -- We speak English but it's nothing like England ! -- Are there retired US expats living there happily and cheaply (?) or are they being exploited and used by the locals (?) perceived as rich like in the Philippines and often charged more ? -- Cost of living is a bit lower than Cuenca Ecuador where many Americans are retired - than in BA. -- I can't seem to find any older people's vlogs by elderly expats around Argentina anywhere ? -- -- -- I'm enjoying your content.

Pone los subtitulos en castellano, por favor.

English is quite easy because of less conjugation and everything can be a verb. The spelling, though. Do you realize there is no spelling bee contest in most of the other languages? It doesn't make any sense.
