A Nova Scotia woman says her mother-in-law died after she left an emergency room where she waited for seven hours before giving up.

“I did not think I would be sitting in this chair yesterday morning, advocating potentially for better health care,” said Katherine Snow from Port Caledonia in Cape Breton.

Snow’s mother-in-law, Charlene, arrived at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital in the early afternoon of Dec. 30, 2022 with “intense jaw pain” and flu-like symptoms.

Snow said Charlene had been ill in bed for days, and having heard of overcrowded hospitals in the past weeks, she didn’t want to endure the wait times.

Nonetheless, she “mustered up the energy to go” that Friday.

The 67-year-old woman waited seven hours before giving up and calling her husband, Freddie, for a drive home, Snow said.

“It just became too uncomfortable for her,” she said. “She decided that she would leave and try her luck at the local outpatient clinic the next morning.“

Charlene didn’t make it to the next morning; Her heart stopped just an hour after leaving the hospital.

Someone needs to be charged with criminal negligence because that is what it is

This is happening far too often and is absolutely terrifying! I have family in Nova Scotia and have heard first hand some of the horror stories about the health care system there and frankly its barbaric. Change needs to happen NOW.

Canada is basically like a third world country when it comes to healthcare. My partner has been dealing with a health issue for a year, and the doctors are doing nothing to figure it out, instead they have prescribed him countless different medications that have severe side effects because they don’t care to actually do their job. I can’t imagine growing old in this country with the way things are now.

This is every hospital in America. I waited 12hrs while convulsing and seizing because there is such horrendous triage in hospitals.

I waited for 6 hours at an emergency room at one hospital in Québec.
After 6 hours later, I could meet a generalist and then came back home, but my conditions got worse, so I went back to the hospital and passed out.
It was a septic shock.
Fortunately, I survived, but I feel scared whenever I get sick because meeting a doctor is challenging in Canada.
I think the best medical system is mixing Canadian medical system and South Korean system together.

What is equally scary is the deafening silence on the part of Government at all levels re the "total collapse" of Canada's once world renowned health system. Imagine, no place to turn when ill b/c To go to the ER means total discomfort in a public space and now a death sentence.

People should be out in the streets protesting. This could be fixed. But because we do nothing they don't

My heart breaks for both of the women and the families left behind who passed away while trying to get much needed care at the hospital emergency.

For all the people who read this, a sore jaw is a sign of heart failure for WOMEN. So is throwing up and back pain. I hope one day the medical system will treat women symptoms and not expect them to have men symptoms.

Get a lawyer and sue the province. Only way to bring attention to this is for people to stand up against the incompetence.

Why are we importing record amount of new people when our services clearly cannot handle the strain of the added demand. All immigration should be stopped and all that money should be pumped into healthcare until we clean up this mess. My condolences to this poor ladies family and friends.

Transportation a mess... health care a mess... food affordability a mess...economy a mess. Keep voting Liberal and expect the same result.
