Is there another seam similar to the French seam, but the inside of the seam is actually sewn down to the garment?

Hi Cheryl,

Thanks for your clear demonstration.

Can I ask is there any point finishing seams when doing quilts or quilted cushions that obviously have the batting attached to the fabric? I’m new to sewing and quilting and always leave seams as sewn but some of the cotton fabric does fray. Many thanks.

I believe this demonstrates why, in dressmaking, we always has a five eighths seam allowance - that’s what it takes to sew a french seam. High end fashion still use this seam in expensive items such as blouses. Befire the overlocker it was used extensively on lightweight fabrics where a neat finish was needed. Does anyone know about this?

Would you clarify what the difference is between a scant quarter inch seam and a 3/8” seam? Is the goal to have the second seam enclose the first sewn seam?
