So are we assuming that there exists an example of the opposite case being true and then showing that no such example
exists or that the opposite case is the true case all the time and disproving that?

why did you make a and b odd, not sure but is because if they were even then they would have been in their simplest form. I am an a level student coping with the current topics, and would want to ask would it be different if you were trying to prove by contradiction that root 7 is irrational. would that take a different approach?
