The Jimmy Akin Podcast | Episode 016 (January 6, 2025)

Christians often ask the saints in heaven for their intercession—to be their heavenly prayer partners.

Normally, they’re thinking of the human saints who are up there, but occasionally they’ll ask their guardian angels or one of the other angels like St. Michael or St. Gabriel for prayers.

Either way, they often think of the idea of heavenly intercessors as something new, something that came in with the Christian age.

But, as Jimmy Akin shows you today, that’s not true!

Such a clever intro to a defense of the intercession of Mary and the other saints! I've always seen angels as undermining Protestantism because of their mediator roles. Really undermines the Protestant interpretation of 1 Tim 2:5. Angels are mediators/intercessors but never gave themselves as a ransom for all.

Thank you for making this. Happy New Year's, Jimmy! Prayed for you and everyone here in my daily Rosary today and at Mass yesterday celebrating the Solemnity of The Epiphany of the Lord (Three Kings Day), when the magi/Three Wise Men visit our Lord Jesus bringing Him gifts of Gold (a symbol of wealth and power, which identifies receiver as king), Frankincense (crystalized resinous sap of a tree, which is used as incense and an offering; it's symbolic of prayer), and Myrrh (a resinous tree sap used in healing liniments and as embalming ointment which foreshadows death) . Hope you and yours have a light-filled peaceful joyful blessed week.

Matthew 2:2

We saw his star at its rising
and have come to do him homage.

Mathew 9-12

After their audience with the king they set out. And behold, the star that they had seen at its rising preceded them, until it came and stopped over the place where the child was. They were overjoyed at seeing the star,
and on entering the house they saw the child with Mary his mother. They prostrated themselves and did him homage. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed for their country by another way.

Merry Christmas, Jimmy and everybody!

Looking forward to the next podcast episode about the humans who are a kingdom of priests! Thank you and God bless you always, Jimmy Akin!

Matthew 18:10 See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father.

Revelation 8:3-4 Another angel came and stood at the altar, holding a gold censer. He was given a great quantity of incense to offer, along with the prayers of all the holy ones, on the gold altar that was before the throne. The smoke of the incense along with the prayers of the holy ones went up before God from the hand of the angel.

Psalm 141:2 Let my prayer be incense before you; my uplifted hands an evening offering.

Psalm 90:11 "For he hath given his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.” Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God’s love entrusts me here, ever this day be at my side, to light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.

Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God’s love entrusts me here, ever this day be at my side, to light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.

I so wish that there would be more artwork to depict the angels as priests and intercessions

That was really fascinating to learn the basis of some of our beliefs that extend from Judaism.

Very interesting, I enjoyed listening to your video. At this time, I am still focusing on the Bible and feel I need to know it better before reaching out to read the other writings such as Book of Enoch and Book of Jubilees. Nice to get a taste of those peripheral books from your discerning knowledge.

this historical context is the reason why martin luther invented the scripture alone doctrine. disregarding other source of christian practice in order to dismiss any supporting document that supports catholic teachings.

It fascinates me that though God is all knowing and all seeing He allows Himself to be influenced by the requests of Angels.

Are you aware of the Jewish literature that treats Moses and other prophets (even Rachel) as intercessors in heaven? Suan Sonna did episode of Holy Smokes on topic.

In reference to Job, the first example could be a reference to the Son interceding on behalf of Job to the Father.

Hey Jimmy, weird/silly question. Could we legitimately call Jesus the God Emperor of mankind? This is a tittle given to a character in the Warhammer 40K universe but it would seem to fit Jesus well.

-Jesus is God.
-He is King of Kings which can defined as Emperor.
-He is king over mankind.

Thanks!

I thought the catholic church did not recognize the book of Enoch? I remember asking that in RCIA because the book is really interesting and, to me, answers a lot of questions. I'm not all the way through the video, I may be speaking too soon

My impression of Job there is that he was somehow referring to Christ.
