I was just telling my wife I wish this guy lived nextdoor, referring to Ricky. He's teaching those of us on his channel music theory as simple as he can make this subject. My old brain hurts.

This was a super really good lesson. I watched the original video where you went off on this tangent, and this one is even better than the original! Thank you sincerely for helping me understand. I actually look forward to noodling around with this stuff on my guitar now instead of dreading it. Amazing.

Thank you! This is much appreciated 👍 I don't understand it completely yet, but it definitely helps grasping music theory.

As a teenager I played classic guitar (on a Spanish guitar), it's now 30 years later and I started playing again. This time on an electric. Since I forgot everything and I never really understood in the first place, I have set myself the goal of understanding music theory before trying to learn chords. It's been a month now and I'm feeling comfortable the way this is going. But admittedly it's only because of you, I don't think I saw it so well explained somewhere else.

You are the God of Music Theory. I’ve learned (and understood) more chord theory from the three videos of yours that I have watched so far than all the other theory lessons, books and videos I’ve used over MANY years of playing the guitar. Who knew that Modes could actually make sense! I’m really enjoying music theory for once! I may have to buy your book! 🤣

Waiting for your book to arrive. You are the only person I have seen that talks about the circle of thirds. I have also never heard extended chords explained so well

Best instruction on YouTube from a music theory perspective. However, as a beginner, I would not have kept playing guitar if I chose him as my first instructor. I found a nice young teacher who kept it easy enough to get me interested, Country Song Teacher. Love country music and he keeps it very simple. He focuses on 4 basic chords C, G, Em and D. I can play hundreds if not thousands of songs with these 4 chords. Even better, the busker style of these chords are Cadd9, G, Em and Dsus4. Keep your ring and pinky finger locked on 2 bottom strings. I love singing and found countless songs I could sing along to. My experience, try Country Song Teacher, try many of the other fantastic instructors and put it all together with Ricky. THANK YOU. It’s a journey not a destination.

Incredible lesson. His book is amazing. Ive had it about 3 months and to see each lesson explained is a perfect way to learn theory .. best book on guitar and theory ive bought in the 50 years of playing. Upper extentions and modes explained so perfect. Chord building explained better than my guitar teacher. Youtube and people like Ricky show us things we had no idea of in the 1970s. Thanks Ricky

Hey Ricky. I figured out these cycles about 20 years ago. I called them 'expansions' of the major scale. Expansion Zero (E0) is the basic scale, expansion one (E1) is your cycle of thirds, and expansion 2 (E2) turns out to be the cycle of fifths, but only of the diatonic scale. E2 is useful for understanding 'root movement' in chord progressions that use the triads, sevenths, etc of the chords found in E1.There are only three 'expansions', because if you use the 'skip' method on E2, you end up with repetition of E0. If you spell all the major scales, and then create expansions of all of them, you pretty much have everything you need to know to play in any key...especially if you're wanting to play simple songs and jazz standards. Then you just locate the notes you need on the guitar for any of them! (Hah!) Nice explanation, by the way.
