It's stated somewhere that IG flak armor will likely stop a single laz bolt or a few rounds from an auto gun.
Auto guns can very wildly but most are at least vaguely similar to 308

You could always use a combination of materials so you have less trade off. UHMWPE for general coverage but ceramic plates for vital areas. Downside is that both of those options tend to be bulky, UHMWPE in particular.

The Imperial Guard is heavily armored and heavily armed.

They are equipped with armor that protects them from the majority of weapons on the battlefield of humans, and their lasguns punch with the force of a .50 rifle.

The issue... Is that the more common stories involve super soldiers, demons, bio-weapons, bio-weapons that are soccer hooligans, and cataclysms.

And they're still holding.

The unfortunate part is the Imperium easily has the resources and ability to make and equip the IG with significantly better weapons, armor and supporting gear even with all the lost knowledge. The attitude of soldiers being expendable and innovation being heretical stops that cold.

when it comes to the imperium, the biggest issue is the idea of new equipment is considered heretical and the past is better is what holds the Imperium, in 40k, you are either a slave or a space marine, no inbetween.
Plus IG Lasguns are great against other humans but when it comes to the armor and/or whack biology of other aliens, yea that issue is parent.

Flak armor actually does very good at protecting them BUT typically it doesn't matter because most of the things their fighting are 2-3 times the size of guardsmen anyway

Yeah but a quick search and a plastic plate is more expensive than a steel one..have a shelf life and more back deformation so we're still not there!!
But a few day ago ive seen an article about special silk worm that make silk 6x stronger than spider web so by the time we get cheap plastic armor there's a chance that for lets say double the price you'll get a soft and lightweight vest that will last a life time and could take like 50-60 shot without real damage to it!!

Actually the guards armour is much much stronger than that, it will protect or reduce damage against many small arms. Although the name is the same as something in irl, its definitely not the same. Its way more sophisticated than anything we have irl, and can outright stop/deflect a lasgun shot which is the same as getting hit by a .50, except worse in everyway.

IRL this armor would be super uncomfortable because if you're doing a ruck march or are just doing guard duty in an arid or tropical environment you'd be stewing in your own juices and would have something like trench foot over your body due to the excessive sweating in the tropical environment specifically
