RPI 4 decode up to 4K H265 10bit, and up to 1080p in H264. That's why all h264 movies at resolutions above 1080p do not work properly. H265 was created for high resolutions.

Nice to see somebody doing some video testing on the 1Gb model as there will be many users who will use the Pi just for video hoping to save some money.


BTW the reason that the LG demo plays perfectly is that it is HEVC/X265 encoded, which is working out of the box.


H264 4k @60fps is a global issue right now.


I suspect that if you were to try and play the 30fps version of the Big Buck Bunny 4k video, it will likely play just fine.

Nice video. However, 4k file playback capability of Raspberry Pi 4 is only available on LibreELEC Kodi, but not Raspbian OS currently.

i have a pi4 4gb, heatsinks, 64gb ssd on a usb3-sata adapter, and a toshiba(vestel) 4k tv. i have downloaded many movies in 4k, 1080p and 720p and it cant play 720p without frame drops, 1080p on 4k fullscreen is like 4fps, 4k on 4k is...well audio only really.

My Intel core i3 2100 with Intel hd graphics 2000. Intel HD graphics doesn't work in windows 10 for games or video decoding but just gives video output for monitor.

My LG display can 4K, the Pi 4 can 4K, but i can't configure it. /opt/vc/bin/tvservice -m DMT only lists resolutions up tu 1080p.

it worked on my old RCA 32 hd tv it died. Now I got new RCA 32 tv It does 4k I am getting no screen on Raspberry Pi 4

Better buy or build a mini pc for this purpose, you can even streams any movies in browser online without worrying about the temperature. But then there's a raspberry pi 4 case that can improve it, I'm not sure but interested.

How to cool raspberry pi4 with a desktop fan for dummies:
1: Remove Raspberry Pi unit from the case.
2. Point the fan on your raspberry pi or hang raspberry pi on the fan.
3. Turn on the fan.

Why is everyone using shitty Kodi for these devices? I despise Kodi, it's out dated. I want to know how browser video operates through an actual OS like linux or (if one exists, hacked or not) a Windows system.

Kodi sucks. I want another media box but don't want to run kodi, and if I can get more bang for the buck building one out of a pi device I will, but currently the information is of little to know help for me to make a decision.

Why everybody use the so-called instant system of Kodi. The forums alone are garbage.

RPI is the same as other companies that advertised marketing gimmicks and indirect scams too in order to sell and make tons of money for their high salaried and bonuses directors. They said can run 4K does not mean must run smoothly at 4K pathetic 10fps. You should be glad that you still can make it run 1080p with that big fan and heatsink. Usually, we do not use a big fan and big heatsink because it is not realistic. If we want to bother doing all these extra accessories, then I prefer to buy a cheaper Android TV Box which can perform so far more efficiency and features than RPI. Android TV box also looks better, with Google Play, a bunch of apps, easy install drivers, consumes so less power and for the same money invested, I can have a much bigger Ram and Rom size. I still wonder why those fanboys want to invest 8GB to play when I can buy an Intel fast nano PC with the same price. Yes, these stupid fanboys trolls can swamp at me but this also showed that they still do not know they are over pathetic idiot and childish. RPI 4 can only run 720p at just marginally ok but if you play games with it, then 720p is also going berserk. Overall, RPI 4 is only suitable for home DIY toy projects which it is designed to be. All these BT5.0 and gigabit port are useless when BT5.0 is still so slow and 100mbps is still more than enough for 4K videos. 8GB ram is useless when the processor is pathetically slow but these fanboys had refused to face the reality. I saw many fanboys videos even tried to scam others into believing them. To be honest, I was also scammed by these lies and gimmicks in the past when they praised what Pi can do but turned out to be scams.
