Dragons in early Medieval times were actually pretty small, like the size of a dog or sheep. Even the Hydra was depicted being smaller than Hercules. It wasn't until the Renaissance that dragons were being depicted as being huge

I read in an old strange but true book that some worker's was digging a tunnel through a mountain somewhere in the UK and they came across a dragon perfectly incased in the rock. Apparently it was alive as if it had just woken up. It took one big breath, made a massive roar, then just died. It happened around the year 1900 if I can remember correctly.

In a book of Alaskan stories, not sure what it was called I read it as a teen. It tells the story of 2 men looking for gold in the 1800’s maybe early 1900’s during the gold rush n they were up in mountains n cold. They found a tropical place with huge moose n it was paradise. 1 guy wanted to go back n tell people about it but the other guy wanted to stay. So one guy left n could never find it again. But it just makes me think of all the other places like this that stories have been told of underground worlds in caves
