Ten years ago, tragedy struck the Russell family, leaving the lives of teenage siblings Tim and Kaylie forever changed when Tim was convicted of the brutal murder of their parents. Now in his 20s, Tim is newly released from protective custody and only wants to move on with his life; but Kaylie, still haunted by that fateful night, is convinced her parents' deaths were caused by something else altogether: a malevolent supernatural force unleashed through the Lasser Glass, an antique mirror in their childhood home. Determined to prove Tim's innocence, Kaylie tracks down the mirror, only to learn similar deaths have befallen previous owners over the past century. With the mysterious entity now back in their hands, Tim and Kaylie soon find their hold on reality shattered by terrifying hallucinations, and realize, too late, that their childhood nightmare is beginning again...

This is one of my favorite psychological thriller movies. Stoked to watch it again this October.

Flanagan succeeds with his usual signatures of establishing mood, atmosphere, dark lighting, and shadows
The film does a wonderful job fooling the audience making us believe one thing is happening while another actually is
Katee Sackoff is perfect as the mother going from loving to tortured to straight up turning monstrous due to this mirror's influence
There's plenty of cool psychological scares and I really like Karen Gillian too
The parents you feel bad for because they're on the tipping point and the brother and sister are at odds trying to rationalize what's actually going on
It even acts as a haunting portrayal of child abuse and dissolutionment
Both of these characters reflect themselves whether young or old, by the end of the film you start to ask yourself who's the more sane one now?
The ending is a bit of a downer and truth be told there's a few things they don't quite explain
Plus some of the cutting back between the past and present can be somewhat distracting
Perhaps the most baffling thing about this since its release is that no sequels ever followed
It had the potential to be a franchise yet it never got off the ground
Still this second effort by Flanagan creates enough of a disturbing ambiance to make it unsettling for low budget horror even if it's not a traditional scare fest and the ending is predictable
