Explained:
it means "I pray"
which becomes "I pray for you to...go in/come inside/let me explain/...".
It's a word that we use a lot even if it has lost its first meaning in these sentences.

Otherwise "prego" Is still used for prayers.

Thank you .. That explains so much . I thought I was going very wrong with my learning Italian when I visited Italy .

What I learnt - the first language is hands. Tone is the differentiator Words are an added benefit only.

It's not what you say, it's how you say it 😊 Lesson learned 😊

No wonder italians use their hands so much. It's 90% of the language apparently

And you can see why the hand gestures are so important in Italian😂

In Germany we have the word "bitte". It is a kind of a allrounder like prego

I reckon you could replace most if not all of these with “please” in English and it would amount to the same thing (when accompanied by hand gestures of course)

Worked with someone in the 80s who had been raised in Italy. She answered the office phone, "Prego!" I always assumed it meant "hello!!"

That's the word I heard constantly in Italy. I started using it myself 😂.

When I was in Italy I was buying something at a local convenience shop. The old man behind the counter said Prego . I gave him a weird look then he gave me one back . I said to him, in my country and in English when you say prego it’s short for pregnant . And I made a gesture around my belly . He laughed so hard and said you no prego! Prego! Hahaha we both laughed afterwards

In some parts of Belgium, we do the same thing with "s'il vous plaît" 👍🏾

Yep it's all about expression and inflection. Love it.
