Instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) is a safe and effective technique that every practitioner should have in their repertoire. However, learning the technique and buying the correct tool for you are two different things. Buying an IASTM instrument is like buying a new car – research must be done! You have to “test drive” these instruments to determine which one fits your treatment approach, your hand size, and your budget. It has to be practical, affordable, and effective.

Here's a great introductory video to IASTM and how it affects the physical body

That intro is probably the most in depth scientific description of the graston process on YouTube.

I thought the dude on the table was the cadaver until he moved his arm

I just started to use these tools to work smarter rather than harder. This is the best video for showing the graphics and explaination to clients

Thanks for this video. My PT used this on me last week and he said it was "breaking up the scar tissue" but I didn't really get it. The diagram helped a lot.

This scraping technique was used on my hip and trochanter fascia. I went in there with poor balance, pains, and fear of falling. After first treatment my balance was vastly improved enough to give me confidence that I could walk better. Before that, even lifting my leg to get into the car was very painful. This was nearly miraculous! Do much improvement in ONe SESSION., I therefore learned to do it myself. (Nothing beats seeing your chiropractor and physical therapist though. )

At 1:30 in the video you show fascia being "broken up" by your tool as you peel away from the superficial dermal layer. Would it be possible to apply your tool on the cadaver the same way it would be applied to a live human without peeling the Skin up? Then you can try lifting the skin afterwards to see how much adhesive tissue Was "broken up"

PTA here... I talked shit about IASTM for the first 10 years of my career in outpatient PT- mainly cause the prices Graston was charging for their tools was absurd. Eventually had a coworker who was a fan of the technique and watched his results a bit. First time I tried it on an IT band for a patient real quick that we already knew STM to that area was helping, and it amazed me and my patient.
I've since transitioned to acute Inpatient PT and was told all my manual skills were worthless here... and while it isn't daily, I've had numerous patients I've helped to get moving again using it in my hospital... just had a patient who acquired Achilles tendonitis and couldn't walk after a GI surgery cause of it (docs want em up and moving), had her ice it down for a day, then did some gentle iastm and suddenly she can dorsiflex it again.

Was not expecting to see a dead body on YouTube today.

Can we just use a wrench? And is it just for scar tissue, or does it help trigger points, elongating muscle, resetting muscle tone, etc?

Holy effing crap. It went from the cadaver to the guy on the table and I seriously thought he was dead. Stomach churned through most of this video lol.

All Hail "tissue specific"!
I just ordered my set today and am tickled pink to explore with them.

This is helpful but the semi dissected cadaver as a demo seemed very unnecessary and could use some kind of "coming up we're about to see a cadaver" so I could have opted out.

I’m a hairdresser and I have terrible adhesions around the base of my thumb. Could I use this technique on a small area like my thumb?

I appreciate your videos and desire to educate. I’m having a hard time finding any good evidence showing that adhesions are physically “released” and lead to “tissue specific treatment leading to better outcomes” (and what kind of outcomes? Feeling better, short term, long term, function, subjective pain scale) any more than tissue specific exercise itself. With time and money being variables, could you possibly refer to the sources that would dictate that someone should pay for this treatment versus participate in graded exercise or rest for the involved tissue? It’s a continual debate and you’ve obviously chosen a side, but I’d like to have your thoughts on that. Thank you!
