In the hands of the Municipality of Heraklion passes an important bequest, one of the most beautiful mansions in the countryside, which is located in Voutes and due to its special architectural value, it was classified as a preserved building. In fact, it is one of the two neoclassical buildings in the countryside of Crete that has been classified as a preserved building and its heirs have begun the process of donating it to the Municipality of Heraklion. This is the mansion of the family of the landowner and raisin merchant Emmanouil Trigyris ( *who started building it in 1922 and completed its construction in 1926 when it was inhabited*.)
The building occupies 500 square meters, is spread over three floors and includes large warehouses, a kitchen with a huge oven, large bedrooms, while the corridors of the building are so large that they have the width of a normal room. But what steals the show is the family's so-called summer room, which has wonderful paintings of landscapes on the ceiling and in its corners, while the windows are stained glass. During the German Occupation, the house was requisitioned and turned into a command post.
Its owners returned to the building after the liberation, where they found that it had suffered considerable damage from the Germans. The house stopped being inhabited in the last years and after some episodes of vandalism the heirs of the building, descendants of Emmanouil Trigyris, decided to donate it to the Municipality of Heraklion. The president of the community of Voutes , Mr. Giorgos Maltezakis, also made an important contribution in this direction, who in his statements to "P" expressed his warmest thanks to the heirs of the Trigyris family for their decision.
This act is of inestimable value and especially in such a difficult time, such as the one we are going through, when donations are not made every day. After the donation process has been completed, the first request is to fence off the area for public safety reasons, to statically reinforce it, since it shows very serious problems of stability, and to draw up a utilization plan such as turning it into a command post and an agricultural museum.
From the side of the Municipality of Heraklion, the matter is handled by the authorized Municipal Property, St. Archontakis, and the deputy mayor G. Karadinos, who does not hide his satisfaction for the great offer of the heirs of the Trigyris family, stressing that the intention of the Municipality of Heraklion is to restore the building and its operation based on the modern needs of the area.»
*Though the Article is dated 30.03.2017 until today 07.02.2024 nothing has been done to preserve this Mansion....... 🤷
