I’d go dac direct. The purpose here is to compare the amplification I just think it removes a variable for that comparison.

Neither, use the MSB DAC as both DAC and preamp. This will avoid potential synergy between the preamp and power amp by taking it completely out of the picture.

Hi Jay, I have been into Audio for over 40 years and I would go with Boulder for both. Reason being no synergy for either and best Pre-amp for both.

Easy call - use the Boulder because of its superior clarity and transparency. The goal of a solid state preamp is to be invisible and add no coloration or distortion to the equation. Using the Boulder will allow you to compare the two amps better.

Excited for the Boulders to be back in the house Jay! My suggestion is use the same PreAmp or DAC for both amps to compare. if you are comparing the Amps and putting them up against each other then everything else in the chain should match 100%. Just my opinion.

Hi jay, before I judge I need to listen to both your speakers are different and sensitive needs a lot and fast power I’m a fan of boulder my dealer here in Australia has them I have the phono stage.
But since I’m using ch precision m2 it’s my favourite powering my magico m3 I consider them one of the hardest speaker to feed but the upgrade from m1 to m2 is big difference. Good luck in your test and thanks

I think use the Boulder would be the sensible choice out the two preamps but you must also do a DAC direct comparison this will be a more transparent and balanced comparison. I used to have the Gryphon Antileon it is an outstanding amplifier it’s a darker sound than their current line up I used to leave it for weeks it seemed to get better and better the hotter it got 😅

If you are going to only stream as a source, I would play direct into the amps from your dac. I do think the Boulder/Gryphon and Pass/Pass combos you suggested, is the way to go.

Have heard that the preamp::amp coupling for Boulder is DC biased. So if both the Gryphon and Pass Labs amps are not DC biased (I have no idea), or only one is DC biased, then that may mess with the playing field, right?

I think for the best comparison I would use the Boulder with both amps for common ground … the Pass Labs preamp could have synergies with the XA160.8 that likely won’t exist for the Gryphon which could skew the test. That said if you had an extra Gryphon preamp laying around then I’d test each with their respective preamp. Just my 2c.

Sorry just got round to seeing your video, if itbwas me I would use the boulder pre amp for both that way there's no synergy by any power amp and would be in my opinion a better test, anyway please stay safe everyone 😁
