The Chiefs spent Christmas being the Chiefs. Dianna Russini and Chase Daniel assess what their victory over the Steelers says about their standing heading into the playoffs as the AFC’s top seed. They also dig into the other game on the Christmas slate, where the Ravens dominated the Texans, as Chase reevaluates Lamar Jackson’s case for another MVP. Plus, they ponder what Tom Brady’s role in the Raiders offseason might look like and discuss whether there’s interest among teams in Pete Carroll, who’s let it be known that he wants to coach again. And to wrap up the show, they share what they’re most excited to watch in the rest of the Week 17 games.

Excellent episode!! I’m with you on fewer gifts. We gave our nieces really nice gifts this year and they didn’t even remember them the next day. We want to give them things but Christmas maybe isn’t the right time to do it.

Chiefs need to do just enough to win and send the Bills a really nice Christmas gift...the Bengals in round 1.

There needs to be a GM of the year. I vote Veach. Chiefs have more depth than any team in the league.

I used to be all about Belichick. I have seen some of his defensive game plans that blew my mind. But, here's the deal. Look at what Bill was in his career without Brady. Then, look at what Brady was without Bill. Yes. They were magic together. But, Bill was a below .500 coach in his entire career (with plenty of sample size) without Brady.

As a Jets fan, I would mind seeing Pete come back

Pete is better suited for college football. Would love to see him take over at USC or UCLA. Even Cal or Stanford would be intriguing.

You talk about Baltimore being the biggest threat. Personally, I think it's Buffalo.

Lamar cannot pose a threat to the Chiefs in the playoffs unless he doubles his career playoff win record with 2 wins. Two wins in six seasons, and now some people think he is going to win 2 playoff games in one year?

As a Chiefs fan, I'm worried about Buffalo. Josh Allen is a problem. Lamar Jackson is easy to manipulate into doing whatever Spags wants him to do.

Don't tell Amari Cooper he's unknown outside of NFL circles. 😂

Sir…..
Amari Cooper pick #4
Keon Coleman pick #33
Dalton Kincaid pick #28

The Bills have put resources into WR.

Zay Flowers was pick #21
Rashad Bateman was pick #27

The Bills have more early rounders at receiving positions.

The Chiefs have played 11 games this season against legitimate playoff contenders (all except Raiders ×2, Panthers, Saints, & Browns). Here's how they've all gone:

Week 1 vs. Ravens
Out: Brown, Omenihu

In a highly-anticipated rematch of the first AFC championship to feature a pair of multiple-time MVPs under the age of 30, Mahomes outduels Jackson, and the Chiefs' stout defense bottles up prize acquisition Derrick Henry. The Ravens attempt a comeback but are stymied by Isaiah Likely's toe. Final: Chiefs 27, Ravens 20.

Week 2 vs. Bengals
Out: Brown, Omenihu
Mid-game: Suamataia benched for Morris; Isiah Pacheco fractures tibia, out 10-12 weeks.

Lou Anarumo once again demonstrates his ability to befuddle the Chiefs' offense, as Mahomes has a rare multi-pick performance. A scoop-and-score by early-season standout Chamarri Conner saves the day for the Chiefs, and a Harrison Butker walk-off set up by a controversial DPI call seals the deal. Final: Chiefs 26, Bengals 25.

Week 3 at Falcons
Out: Brown, Omenihu, Pacheco
(Morris making first start at LT)

The Chiefs' offensive woes continue, as they can't make good on either of two opportunities to ice the game late, but the defense picks up the slack with Nick Bolton cutting off Bijan Robinson to force a turnover on downs that ends the Falcons' hopes of winning. Final: Chiefs 22, Falcons 17.

Week 4 at Chargers
Out: Brown, Omenihu, Pacheco
Mid-game: Rashee Rice injures LCL, out for season.

The Chargers get out to an early 10-0 lead, but despite the early loss of top wideout Rashee Rice, the connection between Mahomes and rookie Xavier Worthy pays its first big dividends with the Chiefs' longest touchdown of the season midway through and a late conversion to ice the game. Final: Chiefs 17, Chargers 10.

Week 7 at 49ers
Out: Brown, Danna, Omenihu, Pacheco, Rice
Mid-game: Jaylen Watson suffers lower leg injury, out for season.

The Chiefs control a sloppy, weird game featuring 5 interceptions and 0 touchdown passes between Mahomes (2) and Purdy (3) despite good weather and field conditions, and somehow also vastly improve their woeful red-zone offense with 4 scores on 4 drives. Final: Chiefs 28, 49ers 18.

Week 9 vs. Buccaneers
Out: Brown, Danna, Fortson, Johnson, Omenihu, Pacheco, Rice, Smith-Schuster, Watson, Wiley
Mid-game: Patrick Mahomes injures his ankle but finishes the game.

The Chiefs' usually stout defense fails to close a game for perhaps the first time in 2024, although they wouldn't have been in that position had the offense sealed the win on the previous drive. The Bucs make a controversial decision to kick the extra point and force overtime, where the Chiefs win the coin toss, drive down in their typical slow, methodical fashion, and punch it in. Final: Chiefs 30, Buccaneers 24 (OT).

Week 10 vs. Broncos
Out: Brown, Fortson, Omenihu, Pacheco, Rice, Smith-Schuster, Watson, Wiley
Mid-game: Wanya Morris re-aggravates a nagging offseason injury but returns later in the game.

Another clunker of a performance by the Chiefs' offense at least features Travis Kelce's first touchdown of the season, and the defense holds strong until the Broncos' final drive. Rookie Bo Nix picks apart a tired defensive unit, gets the Broncos into high-probability field goal range, and looks certain to have handed the Chiefs their first loss until standout linebacker Leo Chenal knocks the kick to the ground. Final: Chiefs 16, Broncos 14.

Week 11 at Bills
Out: Brown, Butker, Fortson, Omenihu, Pacheco, Rice, Watson, Wiley

The odd rivalry between the Bills and Chiefs continues, as surging MVP candidate Josh Allen runs in a critical touchdown on a late 4th down to put the Bills up 9. Mahomes is unable to lead a miraculous comeback, instead throwing a game-sealing interception. Final: Bills 30, Chiefs 21.

Week 14 vs. Chargers
Out: Brown, Butker, Fortson, Hardman, Hendershot, Rice, Shrader, Watson, Wiley
Mid-game: DJ Humphries strains hamstring, out week-to-week. (Thuney moves to LT)

The Chargers' league-leading scoring defense puts the kibosh on the Chiefs' middling offense once again, but not to be outdone by backup kicker Spencer Shrader's heroics against the Panthers, third-stringer Matthew Wright doinks home a kick that wins KC its ninth consecutive division title in his second stint with the team. Final: Chiefs 19, Chargers 17.

Week 16 vs. Texans
Out: Conner, Fortson, Hardman, Hendershot, Humphries, Rice, Watson, Wiley (Mahomes playing through high-ankle sprain)
Mid-game: Jack Cochrane fractures ankle, out for season; Chris Jones strains calf, out day-to-day; Jawaan Taylor suffers knee injury, out day-to-day.

In what might have been the first normal game played by the Chiefs all season, their new offensive line scheme holds up well enough to finally allow Mahomes, the most-hit quarterback in the league, time to throw—but he takes very little of that time dicing up the Texans' secondary, and Spags' defense does the rest, with Trent McDuffie collecting his second career pick in as many games. Final: Chiefs 27, Texans 19.

Week 17 at Steelers
Out: Cochrane, Conner, Fortson, Hardman, Humphries, Jones, Rice, Watson, Wiley

The Chiefs' offense finally hits its stride on Christmas, perhaps avenging the team's poor showing against the Raiders in 2023, with the wideout trio of Hopkins, Brown, and Worthy proving formidable and Justin Watson and Travis Kelce providing some extra juice as the Chiefs clinch the 1 seed with a week to go. Final: Chiefs 29, Steelers 10.

Record against these teams: 10-1, outscoring opponents 262-204 (23.8 PF/G, 18.5 PA/G).

No team is going to beat the Chiefs, but injuries might.

Re: Lamar vs Josh You can't read anything into Lamar's game on Christmas.... They beat a JV team because of all of Houston's injuries & basic problems... as opposed to Josh who has indeed put the Bills on his shoulders and carried them almost exclusively...hands down... In addition, you can always depend on Lamar to play badly against a good (not even great) defense... All you have to do is "rattle" him a little bit and he's good for 2 INT's ...minimum.... Just look at his and I am a Chiefs fan !....I am much more concerned with the Bills than I am the Ravens.
