This £169 PC has an i7 8700 - But Was It Worth It?

The 6 core, 12 thread I7 8700 was out of my price-range a few years ago, but now it can be found as part of some pretty cheap prebuilt PCs. Sometimes these are gaming machines that come with a graphics card, and sometimes they are pretty basic.

Today's system falls somewhere in between and includes some really solid parts to form the basis of a capable budget system.

Having a PC with a DVD drive (and a bay in the cabinet) is always worth it for me. I have got dozens and dozens of games' DVDs that I can't use in my "modern" PC, because decent new cabinets don't support DVD drives.

I almost always enjoy every episode you produce. Like 95 percent of them. You Tube should give you more credit. You deserve it.

That i7 8700 is still great. I like the simplicity of this build and the price you got it for was also awesome.

$170 for the whole PC is a great buy. Thanks for sharing. While the 12400f is faster it also still costs $130 to $150 new. That is close to the price of your (mostly) complete PC. Pair that 8700 with a Rtx 3060 a new tower cooler and you are set for the next few years (Maybe grab a solid 650W Psu).

I’ve been waiting ages for you to cover the 8700. I have this with a 2080 super. Thanks for the great video 👍

watching a video from you is such a blessing! also i think the 8700 would go along with a 5700xt VERY well, especially if playing on 1440p (less cpu load usually)! also if you threoretically wanna upgrade to 9th gen, i'd say it'd be better to directly jump over the 9900k!

Big fan of your videos. I enjoy all the different combinations you put together and test. It’s always cool seeing what older hardware can do.

Recently built a used parts rig with an 8700, 2070, H310M, 16gb Corsair Vengeance RGB RAM, and 120mm aio in a brushed aluminium case for 800 NZD (about 400 GBP).

It goes hard! The 8700 is a great budget CPU in 2024 🙂👍

07:30 when you said adding RTX 2080 Ti, should've just using secondary PSU dedicated only for the GPU.

So dual PSU setup

got an 8700 for free in late 2021. put it together in Jan 22, added a 3080 12GB at some point and am very happy at 4k 60 fps highest quality in any game that I touch. Granted, Cyberpunk and Starfield are not among them. Forza 5 is though. I'll look into a repalcement when it starts choking and no earlier. What I like too is the comparably moderate power consumption.

I'm still using my i7 8700K I bought back in 2018. What a champ of a cpu!

Nice to see a video of a computer with an i7 8700! I still use one in my personal rig and performs still really good with an rx6700 (non-xt)!

Good deal or bust for $300?
MSI Z370-A Pro Motherboard
i7 8700k
ASUS GTX 1060 6GB Turbo
16GB of Patriot Viper DDR4 RAM at 3000MHz
Corsair H100i 240mm AIO cooler
Kediers C570 open air case with 7 RGB fans. The PC came with no PSU or storage.

I recently upgraded my 9600k to a 13600kf. I cap my fps to 165Hz and I didn't see much difference in fps (most games sit on the limit with either CPU & a 4070Ti) 1% lows are better though. I had an 8400 before the 9600k and its still going strong in a basic build. It was a great gaming CPU back in the day, Great video thanks.

I have a i7-8700K with a GTX 1080 Ti and that pairing is still holding up very well.

Can't wait to see the i9 video. I've been using a 9900k for years now and its held up pretty good.

That i7 is basically on par with the 3600, so it's obvious that it would be capable.
I was a bit surprised at how close it was to the 12400 in Cyberpunk, but then I remembered that the 2080Ti hasn't been ultra top range for ages now, the i5 would pull ahead significantly if a stronger card were used.

still rocking a 8700k oc'd to 5.1GHz since 2019. paired with a 3080ti and playing on 5120x1440 it still runs like a dream! absolutely no stutters or hitching at all. no upgrade for me yet seeing the non-k variant holding up really well still.

nice video as always, you're doing a great job for the ever growing community 👍👍

Oooh that blue LED transparent plastic case fan, such a classic. Instantly recognizable, too, even before the machine was turned on you could just tell it was going to have blue LEDs.
