The third world originally referred primarily to the countries that were members of the Non Aligned Movement, ie. They decided to not join either power bloc of the cold war.
They were developing nations, many of which were newly independent, that decided that wanted to protect their national sovereignty and struggle against imperialism, colonialism and bloc politics

This how I categorize it:
First world = fully developed country
Second world = developing country
Third world = underdeveloped country

LIC = Low Income Country

I know the answer:
Splitting the world into 3 worlds is historical, where:
- the first world is the Western (Capitalistic) one;
- the second world is the Communist one;
- the third world is every country which doesn't join the Cold War (meaning, to any of these 2 worlds)

Third World referred to the Non Aligned movement. Not necessarily the poor countries (although many of the non aligned ones were poor countries, but the term is not meant to describe anyone's poverty).

Bharat (India) led the Non Aligned Movement, gathered support from Africa, West Asia, South East Asia and several other regions. China (clearly a Soviet bloc country) was also a namesake Non Aligned country.

As someone from post-soviet country, we usually group countries as "already developed countries" or "developing countries." And all post-soviet countries are classified as ''developing countries''.
