After a long break in aikido and trying different martial art. I'm back in aikido. Aikido is a way of life for me, I've no intention to engage in a street fight or combat or competition. I've a family and a job, I can't afford to train like an athlete (nor to show up with injury at work). I like to train aikido till I'm old and to maintain my health, which is possible in aikido. What makes me back to aikido, was reading some of people's comment about martial art on youtube, I know that aikido also teach its participant to be respectful and humble -- which we need more in real life -- cheers

The reason they breakfall like that is to avoid injury. If they didnt they would have broken wrist arms or worse. The spirit of aikido is not to attack it is to defend and not harm the attacker. That is what it is designed for. Not a ring fight or a challenge. We dont care about such things. It a peaceful. Minimal damage self defense system. Thats it. Nothing more, nothing less. Be respectful please.

absolutely beautiful performance. it looks amazing, to defeat someone with his own force without jumping and hitting around like a maniac.
just harmonic and smooth.

All martial arts are great. Every art has something to offer . All martial art is created initially for self defense in it's own unique and wonderful way. From the grace movements of Aikido to the devastating attacks of Muay thai..

Claiming it's useless as a form of self defence is synonymous with claiming surfing is useless as a method of transportation. (:

The ancestor style of Aikido, Daito-ryu Aiki-jujutsu, has more direct, violent but still flowing techniques. There are plenty of vids here on YouTube demonstrating its applications. I'm pretty sure the students' groans of pain is not fake.

"I love Aikido, Its so beautiful"
"Yes, but how effective in a real fight????"

I think that's a big part of what this entire debate is about. What educated, civilized adult would allow themselves to get in a real fight? If you've trained in a martial art under a responsible Sensei, would you start a fight? Would you even be allowed to be provoked into a fight? If you answer yes to either one, you have no business training in martial arts.

Once you get past that, then you can objectively compare one marital art to another as a means of self-defense, meaning defense against a mugging attempt or an unprovoked attack of some kind, Aikido is very effective. Most attempted muggings involve grabbing arms, neck or some other part of the body. Against someone who has trained in Aikido, there is nothing that will make you more vulnerable to being completely neutralized in seconds. A frontal grab by an aggressive individual trying to physically provoke you often starts as a push to the chest or a grab to the lapel or both lapels. Again, against an Aikidoka, that is a very good way to be thrown or experience a very painful joint lock and a very quick pin to the floor.

Aikidoka don't fight, nor for that matter do any mature adults. That is not what Buddho is about. We do not live in feudal Japan or the wild west. This is what we chose as a martial art, many of us in addition to other forms. The idea of getting into a “street fight’ is ludicrous.

i did one of the basic aikido wristlocks (got it from somewhere else though) in BJJ, worked just fine. you just have to put it tothe test and drill it properly.

I do aikido and know many of these moves, so for people to say this is stage, they are wrong. Next year I will be testing for my junior black belt (because I'm young) and I will have to do this sort of thing in front of my sensei. It has took me 5 years to get to this level and I am still training.

In the early days of Aikido, Ueshiba only accepted students that already had at least a black belt in another martial art (Karate, Judo, etc).
In other words, Aikido might actually work - provided you knew how to fight in the first place.

Beautiful. Teaches you so much about life.

The movements are exaggerated to prevent damage...   The guy acting the antagonist moves into the move in order to prevent himself from getting hurt. I studied Hapkido, (yes I know not the same thing) and we had to do the same thing when working with the instructor. Otherwise it could very easily hurt. A lot.

I liken learning Aikido to learning Mathematical physics, very complex and arduous however one you initiate yourself into the practice your form will be graceful ...and invaluable if needed

all these people saying that Aikido is useless...look everyone, this is martial arts. It's a protection and art at the same time and it's also beautiful. If you came here to watch people fighting go and search up boxing because this is not the same thing. Understand the difference

I don't see why people complain so much about it being staged - duh, it's what it is. They're showing off skills and such. I bet your eye is just untrained to really see the worth of their skills. You judge off an entire martial art based on one video you don't even understand the context of. Saying aikido won't help you in a combat is like saying a person wearing glasses and holding a book could never win in a fight with you, since they must be nerds. You're just looking on the surface and your conclusions don't even make sence according to the surface...
