Stephen the Great, also known as Stephen III of Moldavia, was a medieval ruler who reigned as voivode (prince) of Moldavia from 1457 to 1504. He earned the epithet "the Great" due to his remarkable military victories and his efforts to defend Moldavia against various external threats.

Stephen was a great strategist. He has won 46 out of 48 battles and, for the most of his long reign, he had to fight 3 enemies at the same time: Poles in the north and east, Hungarians in the west and Ottomans in the south. Just to have a clear image of Stephen abilities, Ottomans have lost more than 500.000 soldiers in 50 years of campaigns against Stephen. He is considered one of the greatest defenders of Christianity.

When speaking about cruelty, one thing to understand about that period is that it was a harsh and brutal one. We judge them by the values we hold today but princes who were weak and mellow and kind, didn't rule for almost 50 years and left a legacy lasting to this day.

Stephen the Great (Stefan in romanian) was known for executing people who didn't come to war prepared full gear. He was filling up his army with people caught with the lasso, literally. He decapitated all the people who could claim the throne from him.

His cousin, Vlad the Impaler, was a step up from him. He is known for impaling thousands of turks and cutting the hands of thieves. Thing is, he learned the impale thing from the turks themselves when he was a royal hostage there.

Almost no one from back then could be considered a good person by todays standards.

You can visit every Monastery, visit the inside and pray. Every one of them hold religious services like any other house of worship. What makes them unique is their rich history and their distinct beautiful architecture. They’re one of the 9 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Romania, listed as “Churches of Moldavia”.

Stephen the Great is one of our ultimate heroes, if not for him and for our other great leaders like Vlad the Impaler, Michael the Brave and so on, Europe wouldn’t stand against the Ottomans. Our ancestors had to no choice but to fight non stop to maintain our sovereignty and not to fall in enemy’s hands. We as people were oppressed for so many centuries, they had to fight, to keep us Romanians alive! Also, Imagine having the fate of the entirety of Europe in your hands amongst all this…for that, fighting makes up most of our history.

I live near Vaslui, site of the famous battle that he fought in against the Ottomans. There is a massive equestrian statue of him on top of a hill to which you have to climb 100 or so steps. It’s an impressive site and a great monument to his greatness!

Stefan was almost supernatural for those very hard times...specially in this region. Imagine having almost 50 big battles, dominating the area, from a small medieval "country" / principality.
Cheers.

for the Romanian people, Vlad the Impaler is synonymous with justice for the people, the enemies knew that Vlad the Impaler does not sell the people to the rich and foreigners...

Hi Mr. Giant, as a Romanian I thank you for these videos you make about my country. I think is relevant for you to know that the churches painted on the outside, which make them unique, are for the people. At that time the language used for the sermons was old Slavonic or Greek, so people couldn't understand. So they painted on the outside the main scenes depicted in the Holly Scriptures for the common people, to understand what the Christian religion is about. So the beautiful outer paintings were not only for aesthetic purpose but for a practical one, to teach people what the Christianity is about.

Hi
About Vlad the Impaler, if you want to see and understand why we as Romanians love him so much, it is a movie that you can find on YouTube.
It's called, Vlad Tepes and is a movie made in 1979. You will understand a lot of things from there not the lies they always say about him ...
Oh and yeah, the thing that King Charles, been cousin with Vlad Tepes, in my eyes it's an absolute lie I don't know what they are thinking to do in the future with this, but it's fishy.

"How did he enjoy his 47 years of ruling ?" Well, Barbu Ștefănescu Delavrancea, a great Romanian writer and poet, author of "Sunset" (part of his historical trilogy), offers an answer to your question, through Ștefan's "own" words on his death bed: "Moldova n-a fost a strămoşilor mei, n-a fost a mea şi nu este a noastră, ci a urmaşilor urmaşilor noştri în veacul vecilor!". I'll let you discover their meaning, all by yourself. If Shakespeare would have been born in Romania, he would have written about both Ștefan Cel Mare and Vlad Țepeș (not that his depiction of Vlad would have been any better than Bram Stoker's fictional Count Dracula)

I am born in Vaslui, the history of him is very funny and very interesting. He did everything he could to play dirty and keep his people save! He poisoned the water, he tricked the ottomans in many ways.

There ear 8 painted monasteries: Voronet, Humor, Sucevita, Moldovita, Arbore, Patrauti, Sf. Ioan cel Nou de la Suceava, Probota. All are in the Unesco World Heritage List. Only Voronet and Patrauti are built by Stefan cel Mare, but were painted almost 50 years after his death. The most impressive interior is at Probota, buit on the hills of Suceava county. The painting from the interior was revealed a few years ago after a long period of restoration. Every important prince of Moldova has his own church with his tomb inside. The situation is similar in Muntenia. There are around 1000 monasteries in Romania.
