In Niyi Osundare's "Not my Business," the poem persona observes three distinct instances of oppression.
Each episode underscores the perpetuation of oppression through violent suppression, its human toll, and the resulting loss of livelihood. Despite recognizing these injustices, the persona consciously chooses indifference, refusing to intervene or take responsibility. Instead, they prioritize personal pleasures and needs over addressing systemic wrongs.
However, the persona's indifference comes full circle when the very oppressive forces they ignored visit their own doorstep, subjecting them to the same mistreatment. This sudden reversal shocks the persona, who once believed in his or her superiority and immunity to such suffering, only to realize that (s)he, too, can fall victim to the cruelty (s)he enabled.
