How good do you think Mew2King would be if he competed today?

I met him once. My friend hosted a small tournament and he came. We even picked him up at the airport. He was very kind and polite. Extremely quiet but you could tell the poor dude had some depression issues. He kicked everyone's ass since it was just a little tournament and would nap between every game. Absolute legend

I have some stories from this era of melee.

1. I played Mew2King at a ChuDat biweekly in bracket, and with the Gentleman's Clause we agreed to play with Pokeballs. I won game 2 on FD in his Sheik vs my Zelda when he threw a Pokeball at me, and I reflected it with Nayru's and killed him. And he looks at me and laughs "I forgot she could do that".

2. I teamed with Azen at some throwaway VA local event. He was so drunk he could barely hold the controller and walked around with Marth fsmashing and laughing. We still won teams.

3. Mew2King came down to ChuDat's place in 2007 where I was staying for the summer. He invited me to FCD in Indiana, and I said I couldn't go because I had no money. Jason paid for my ENTIRE TRIP. He paid someone to drive from NJ to VA to pick me up, got another NJ player (WarriorOfZarona) to drive me to Indiana, and then the entire trip in reverse.

Whenever people talk about the Golden Age of Melee, it really was.

He was #1 in melee and brawl at the same time. No other person has been #1 in two smashes at once. So for me he is the goat

2:06 I think this is what solidifies his legacy for me. He pushed the competitive needle more than anyone else in the scene and it speaks volumes that his work is still being used. He deserves every ounce of respect he gets. Smash GOAT

M2K was the best to ever do it. The Jimi Hendrix of his art form. He lived and breathed this game out of passion and a desire to obtain information. No one has had the same drive as him since

Without M2K, Melee wouldn't have made it past 2007. Neither Marth or Shiek would be played how they are. Some of the places I see people ranking him are absolutely insane.

For me M2K was the player I really looked up to in melee. His marth specifically just had this domineering style, this effortless look to how he would delete stocks, all without quite feeling as campy as he definitely was. Fun Fact he is the person with the world record for most tournaments attended lifetime, attending some near 700 tournaments from what I remember. The guy was and still is just a machine, and we love Jason for that.

I think M2k is rightly rated. He's the gatekeeper of being #1 for an entire year. Probably 6th best all time for me, but I can see an argument as high as 4th.

I like the fact that m2k has by far the most registered tournament results in melee still and the 2nd most of any esports player in general. Like he just played so many tournaments its unreal

I think it's pretty cool how in many docs, he's seen as the one who brought the melee scene back to life at a time when it looked most grim. Much respect, M2K!

I think a lot of people forget that time there was a tourney with Smash 4, Project M and Melee all going on at the same time. All three games had Singles and Doubles. He won Teams in all 3 games, came in first in two of the games and came in second place, I think in Melee. He was definitely the Smash Goat when measured across all games.

Personally I would put M2K in top 5 all time. He's such a monster and his contributions to the community could be debated larger than his accomplishments as a player, which I always add to a player's 'worth' of discussion of their 'greatness'. I think what hurts his credentials, were his meddling years, where you can debate were partially due to him splitting his time with other smash games. But, like Mango, you have to give him props for being in the game as long as he was.

Mew2King's Marth on FD is still one of the most beautiful things Melee has ever produced.
What began as a flowchart became a work of art. Like a stained glass window where all the little pieces have their perfect place.
Ay. Ay. Ay.

I feel like M2K's shortcomings existed purely outside of the game. If they had invented noise-cancelling headphones a lot earlier on, I believe things would have been way different. Regardless of numbers and statistics, Mew2King will always be my #1 Best Smash Player of All-Time.

How good was he?

He took an 8 month break after Genesis, only to beat iBDW and No. 1 Hungrybox in the same tournament (and beat Hbox in a set right after, just couldn't close the Grand Finals out)

I always viewed mew2king as the gatekeeper. He got beat by most of the gods but the players who often rose up to beat some or all of the gods (leffen, sfat, wizzrobe) they all seemed to have the hardest time beating m2k.
Where i view mang0 as the heart and soul of melee, I view m2k as the link between old school and modern melee. His marth in particular was the golden standard for a long time.

M2K is easily the best overall smash player of all time. Top competitor in every game, and contributed so much to the community.

I think the joy of watching M2K was truly the roller coaster of “is he on today or is he off”

Because when M2K is on, it’s crazy to see him play, but when he’s off… you just can’t help but shake your head.

Easily one of the best. Pioneered a lot of fundamentals you see players especially with Marth. He wrote the book on how to punish spacies that everyone followed until Zain improved it further (I never thought PPMD's punishes on spacies with Marth were as consistent or efficient). Despite this however, when you go back and watch a lot of classic old sets, it's very infuriating to see how much he got away with in the neutral game, and how much of it would be (and was considered at the time) gimmicky. His neutral was more of a 7.5 in a sea of 9-10's (Armada, PPMD, Mango, and Hbox later on) which is why he couldn't be top 3 in the era of the Gods
