Associative Property of Integers
What is the Associative Property?
The associative property tells us that when we add or multiply three or more numbers, we can group the numbers in any way we want, and the answer will still be the same.
For Addition:
* Rule: (a + b) + c = a + (b + c)
* Meaning: It doesn't matter how you group the numbers when adding. You'll get the same answer.
Example:
* (-3 + 5) + 2 = -3 + (5 + 2)
* Both sides equal 4.
For Multiplication:
* Rule: (a × b) × c = a × (b × c)
* Meaning: The order in which you multiply numbers doesn't change the result.
Example:
* (-2 × 3) × 4 = -2 × (3 × 4)
* Both sides equal -24.
Remember:
* The associative property works for both addition and multiplication.
* It doesn't work for subtraction or division.
