The Seleucid Empire was one of the major Hellenistic states that emerged after the death of Alexander the Great. Founded by Seleucus I Nicator, A former general of Alexander, he carved out a vast domain stretching from Anatolia to the borders of India, blending Greek and Eastern traditions in a fragile but ambitious empire.

In this first video, we’ll explore the reigns of the early Seleucid kings, from Seleucus I’s military conquests and administrative policies to the challenges faced by his successors. His son, Antiochus I Soter, struggled to consolidate power, while Antiochus II and Seleucus II faced internal strife and external threats that gradually weakened the empire. Finally, we’ll examine the disastrous reign of Seleucus III, whose short rule highlighted the growing instability of the Seleucid dynasty.

The Seleucid Empire was one of the most ambitious Hellenistic states. Managing such a vast and diverse territory was no easy feat!

Greek is easy to pronounce because the sound each letter makes is right in the name, so despite the British penchant for willfully mispronouncing the words of every other culture, I'm going to get you to say this right:

- Ἀντίοχος (note, no upsilon in the Greek spelling — 2 omicrons)
- an.tí.o.kʰos
- an-TEE-awwkh-awws
(Emphasis is on the second syllable, TEE.)

Put the emphasis on the iota (pronounced like the "yota" in Toyota), and standardize the way you pronounce these letters:

I(ota): "ee, " not "eye."

O(micron): it's an "aww" or "ahh" (like the 'o' in 'loch'), never the "ohh" sound the other Greek 'o' vowel, omega, makes (ahhmikron vs ohhmega)... omicron is closer to an English non-nasal long 'a' (alpha makes the nasal 'a' sound).

X(i) or Ch(i): it's not a "qu" or "kuh, " it's a "kh" sound like in CHimera or LoCH Ness — in fact, the "OCH" in loch is exactly the way you pronounce the middle omicron+chi sound in Antiochus, while the proceeding omicron+sigma is pronounced like OSteoporosis.

So, it's not "anti-o-QUEs" or "anti-o-KOOs" or "anti-o-CUSS." It's ant-EE-awwkh-awws.

I know if my bae the Roman Empire could they would’ve let Middle Eastern part of the Seleucid Empire be. Would’ve saved a lot of headaches all the way past 1453 AD
