I was in the same boat. I simply listed my skills earned as a mom on my resume. No apologies for my life. They brought this up too. I will add that the block in more in your head and not in the employer’s. Most employer’s don’t care where you come from, they just want to know how you can fit in and help achieve goals. Answer that and you will rock it. 10-years post mommy-Director of Finance

Mama, stay home and work as a virtual assistant to several small businesses who can't afford to hire one full time by themselves but will pay for 2-5-10 hours a week for services. You'll love it.

I am a PM at a fortune 100 and work with exec assistants to schedule meetings for my projects, my recommendation would be to get comfortable with Outlook and basic excel — and you will be ready to get started, the rest u can pick up on the job- best of luck !!! You got this !!!

What recruiters won’t tell you is they have an age range in mind for Admin Assistants also for most positions in general. Google age range for admins or look at profiles on LinkedIn. You could try volunteering as (Admin support) at a large hospital campus or for a large nonprofit and see if any job positions open up. Also, look for companies that serve an older population. Be careful with temp agencies. If you decide to work with a temp agency make sure the position will give you the right job experience for your next job. Also make sure you can handle the assignment with minimal training.

Apply for a job as a receptionist first.
Eventually they will start giving her more work than just answering phones and *THEY* will train her how to do the tasks that they are giving her.
It's always like that with receptionist positions.

I’m in HR field. No chance unless you know someone unfortunately . People prefer on job experience with software over training courses. And tech savvy is a must for most any position now.

In addition to Admin Assistant being a job that hundreds of qualified individuals with more recent experience + being tech savvy + have a bachelors would apply over a single weekend.

The reality is experience 20 years ago really doesn’t mean anything.

I did the same thing, took a job that required excel on an advanced level and I didn’t know any of it so I bought a Visual learners book for excel and taught myself as I did my tasks at work lol
Now all I use is excel for my personal finances

This is why I always work, even when I was home with my daughter. I didn't stay home with her more than a couple of years, but you should always keep up your skills. Even if it wasn't that her kids are thrown, what if something would have happened to her spouse that caused them to not have an income. I'm a strong believer in two incomes simply to take care of what could happen, and what often happens.

Look for any positions, there are administrative spots where you are required to just print papers out. And in the meantime learn Excel and other programs, many hours of that available even in YouTube.

Udemy would solve her problem for less than $50 maybe youtube for free.

I suggest her go through some retraining program to become a health worker or a Health Care Assistant (HCA). She's got domestic work experiences which could be helpful. Health care workers are in high demand these days. The only concern is that the work exposes to some degree of risks on health safety.

find local community agencies that will help you re-enter -but sales is always an option

She needs to consider some other career paths. Administrative assistants have been phased out of most businesses, except for a dwindling number the old school organizations.

Everyone needs to spend at least 50 hours on the computer to get themselves familiar with how they work. There’s thousands of things you didn’t know about I guarantee it. Also learn how to use search engines effectively is key for any job that requires research or data collection.
