Roofs are on the verge of collapse, walls are missing, and there are health risks everywhere – this is what the people of Khan Younis face as they return to the rubble of their homes after the Israeli army withdrew from the city. Dust from debris fills the air, and every step is dangerous – yet they choose to stay and restore what’s left. As they told Bisan: “A room in my home is better than a palace elsewhere.”

Victims of their own leadership. One would like to think the people will now push their leaders for peace with their neighbours, but something tells me that this narrative of “defiance” is so embedded (and pushed and glorified by external actors, including so many in the West with no real skin in the game), that we will sadly see more generations of kids sliding on rubble. The poor lady saying “why can’t we live like other people” is quite right, she should ask that question to her leaders for them to explain. But then again, she also says: women can’t stay in the home as it is “too exposed”, which tells me this is a society with leaders that probably won’t listen to a woman anyway. Sad on too many levels.
