"Sorry, brother" by Akainu was my favorite part of this chapter. It shows Akainu isn't a complete fucking asshole.

The Kizaru moment took the crown for the “most anticipated Egghead anime moment” for me. Can’t wait to hear the VA 😭

I think Luffy was depressed because he thought he couldn't keep his promise. He lights up when Lilith tells him that he actually kept his promise.

This puts into context and perspective that Akainu was far more hurt by Kuzan's departure from the marines than we anticipated. This situated may hint Akainu's version of this may have been his fall out with Dragon. Big characterization of the OG admirals.

I find it fascinating that one line from two characters each completely reshaped the way we feel about both those guys

I wonder if Zoro's dialogue will come across better in the official translation. Something like 'he's an emperor now, he can't be wallowing in his own grief', rather than making the death itself seem insignificant

It wasn't just Zoro, the whole scene is off. Jinbe said he never saw Luffy so depressed, but Jinbe was literally there when Ace died. Franky said that he can't believe they escaped that situation but he literally bonded with the crew over another buster call. What are we missing?

The Zoro comment to me is an example of one of the worst habits Oda has as a writer, which is that he'll sometimes have a character say the wrong thing just so he can have another character say the right thing. In this case, it's Zoro saying how it's wrong for Luffy to cry over Vegapunk, and then he has Jinbei and Franky correct him and explain why Luffy feels that way. Oda always does this, and it always makes the character in the wrong look worse and even out-of-character at times.
Another example of this was in WCI when Pedro died and Jinbei took charge. Brook was crying over Pedro and calling Jinbei heartless for not caring about his death, but then Jinbei in a very cool way explained how they can't mourn Pedro because then his sacrifice would be in vain, yadayada. I don't think it made much sense for Brook to be the one crying, because he's the oldest one, spent the most time with Pedro and knows the true meaning of death better than anyone. But Oda did that so that Jinbei, who had just joined the crew at that point, could prove his value by showing his levelheadedness. I'm sure if Jinbei wasn't there, he probably would've had Chopper or Nami cry about Pedro and then Brook would've been the voice of reason. There are plenty of other examples of this, but this one has always bothered me.

This chapter exemplifies perfectly why i HATE most theories in the One Piece community and why they're 99% of the time always wrong. People always try to think of crazy twists and secret motives, because it's fun for them to think that maybe things aren't exactly as they seem, but they NEVER take into account how much their ideas take away from the drama and tension of the story, how it literally invalidates most of the personal, emotional and ideological conflict characters go through.

This chapter's example, so many people were saying "Nono, Kizaru had an secret agreement with Vegapunk, both knew he needed to die to have this speech carry this much weight, he was helping him secretly to achieve this while his death was all but guaranteed, to make it worth it". F*ck no, what about the insane pain and conflict of a Marine having to kill his best friends for the cause he believes in? For the cause he's convinced himself will lead to peace? Having to sacrifice what he loves for his duty? Doubting at times if it's the right thing? Maybe secretly praying that they manage to escape? Being the one who's hurting the most.

Character drama, tension, suffering, emotional, psychological and ideological conflicts, that's what Oda LOVES and One Piece is filled with it, from beginning to end, in almost every arc. I don't think he would choose a fun twist for the sake of shock value over character conflict.

So theories like Law being a member of sword and always having a secret plan and pact with the marines (which btw makes no sense and contradicts actual FACTS in the story), Shanks being evil and never caring for Roger or Luffy, or worse, Akainu and Aokiji NEVER having a true fight and clash but it being a plan of both while working together, when they hate each of other and their values and views of justice are completely opposite. It always kills drama and character conflict, if that happens, then where does the story of Aokiji end? the marine who never wanted the responsibility, who HAD to step up because other wise the job would fall on the hands of the worst guy possible, and HE might have ACTUALLY been the right guy, but in the end losing all the same because his will and determination weren't as strong as Akainu's, then leaving the marines, the institution he always believed in to pursue his idea justice on his own, without being bound to their restrictions? Now having the strong will to fight for his justice, even if it means hurting his old friends (like kizaru but reversed maybe).

I'm sorry but those ideas are always so bad... And this chapter proves it.

Elbaf will probably be like 100 chapters. Morj was right, One Piece isn't ending anytime soon.

Akainu really impressed me with that "My bad brother". Like many have mentioned already, this depth could show a possible outlook on Akainus feelings when Dragon left the Marines. The Best friend question was interesting to me as well. Not saying Dragon and Akainu were best friends but perhaps the closest thing Akainu got? Very good end arc chapter.

Maybe the Zoro translation can be cleared up on Sunday. It seems weird but a couple of words can hugely impact the tone of what he said.

Zoro wasn't lying when he said he'd become the king of hell

The line Zoro gave in this chapter sounds like something Shiryu of the Rain would say, not a SH member.
