Just finished The Cormorant. Thanks so much for the brilliant recommendation. I had to check this one out, being from Snowdonia myself. The vivid descriptions of the oppressive weather and landscapes were so beautifully written. All the descriptions in the book, from the cosy cottage to the repulsive bird, are all so vivid and tactile. Great read! Thanks Cliff

I was privileged to direct the film of this novel and to know Stephen, whom we sadly lost last December.

This is becoming my "what not to read" warning channel as I don't like horror. But I still like to listen to reviews.

You’ve pointed me in the direction of a lot of good novels, from His Name was Death to Leaving Las Vegas. This book sounds great, too. I’ll check it out!

All Satan did was he wanted to know what its like to see the most beautiful colours in the world so he changed into a cormorant and everybody has to go mad over it? Thanks for your video man!! Excellent narration! Best wishes to you from Iceland!!

Read this book about 20 years ago, loved it, a superb short horror novel. Cliff always picks that rare gem that should be more well known. Excellent choice, excellent choice.

Have you reviewed The Bell Jar? I can't find the video, and I'd love to hear your thoughts on Sylvia Plath's poetic prose.

"Corvus" is also Latin for "raven" or "crow", and was a boarding device the Roman Republic deployed in the First Punic War. (To great effect.)

The device was a sort of beak at the end of a boarding plank that punched into and held a rival galley in place, thereby allowing Rome to leverage its superior heavy infantry at sea.

Have you come across 'Pestilence' by Wiliam Owen Roberts? (Also Welsh; original title in Welsh 'Y Pla') Quite something too!

If you liked this, I think you'd love "The Hill of Dreams" by Arthur Machen (also a Welshman)

This bird is an environmental pain in the archipelago of the Baltic Sea. Their colonies are a total destruction of trees and other vegetation on the little rocky islands they like for nesting. As their habitat deteriorates they have started to spread to the mainland, inland even. If you have a property on the coast near cormorant colonies, you will be deeply worried. It is a returning species in the Baltic Sea region. It vanished by the early 1900s because of hunting and has been coming back since the 1980s. The excrement of the bird is what kills trees, causes smell that spreads with the wind and overall makes their environment damaged for people, but also for other birds and animals.

I wish somebody wrote a story like this about a dog.
