Instead of painting on the lens, better try this one: 

1. Go to "Setup menu" and choose "dust off ref photo".
2. Screen tells you to take a photo of a bright object and says "Focus will be set to infinity".
3. Here comes the tricky part. Now press the shutter halfway down.
4. Switch the lens to manual mode
5. Tadaa!..you've got automatically infinite focus!

You must have gotten a bad copy because all 3 of mine are tack sharp. I love the fact that new photographers get rid of kit lenses because it makes finding used mint copies that much easier for me. This is a great lens, if you take the time to learn how to use it instead of listening to the "experts" and spend money on expensive fast glass that they really don't need. The optics on this lens are outstanding, It is unreal for close up work. The old Nikon 28-80mm G is a great lens also from the film era that I use all the time on my full frames.

Thannks for this video...I got this lens with a used Nikon D3400, and am VERY HAPPY with its compactness and sharpness: also have its big brother: the DX 55-200mm lens, and BOTH kit lens are very satisfactory, giving me good images for less money! :)

This is so helpful! Looks like I need to upgrade soon! I've had a kit lens for about 6 months now and I have been nitpicking at the details. The images don't seem as "sharp". Also, I was stumped by how to find infinity but you really helped! Thanks!

Hey! I have a few questions on my mind. 1. Does all lenses have infinity focus? What do you mean by "soft" lens? 2. To get the best landscape/star photos with this lens, would i combine both infinity focus and high f-stop, or won't the high f-stop make a difference when i already use infinity focus? 3. And last... I find it really difficult to find the "EXACT" focus for infinity focus as its all eye-measurement, you can't really get a perfect review of the focus before you blow it up on a computer, or can you? Any detailed insight to these questions would honestly make my day.

Tom, I have a question. Will infinity focus point remains the same on 24mm as well? Assuming setting up a infinity focus point at 55mm then turning it back to 18 mm, basically the technique showed my you. Will appreciate your advise.

hey. Can you zoom from about 30m on a human, that is all in the photo, nothing space up and down?

first i have to zoom in to focus on most distant point and mark it. Then zooming out to widest will set infinity?

Just finished my college photography course and this was the only lens I could use with being on a very low budget, displayed my end of year set of four prints all taken with my Nikon kit lens and second hand Nikon D70. We had professional photographers come to the college and view our work the first thing they asked is who took these and what equipment was used, you can imagine the expressions when they found out.

great tip, i did this.. but i guess i dident focus on something far enough .. so depding on distance the dots dont line up..
ideally how far should I use it for refernace points? so i can do properly next time
