Portland solved the country’s homeless problem. Now Portland has to solve Portlands homeless problem.

So they just waste taxpayers money and time with the new law.

Good on the sheriff! She's completely correct!

"Living unsheltered" is not their only offense. In order to do this, at the minimum they must repeatedly trespass, litter, and do their business in public. All illegal things.

$100 fine? If he had money he wouldn't be homeless. 7 days in jail with a bed and food every day? Did they think this through?

The reason why is because they don't have a jail big enough to hold the multitudes of people that they will have to arrest

And, the Sheriff probably has a limited budgrt for operations. It looks as if this new law will greatly increase the costs for room and board. Maybe next tiime they should try to arrest someone a little more amenable to hand-outs.

Total breakdown of society! Politicians making laws that make it likely more homeless find themselves in the street! Law enforcement not enforcing laws no one wants to deal with the problems they create!

The jails “earn” money from those they jail They actually bill them upon release. It’s a PROFIT making system, NOT a justice system.

There ain’t no profit in jailing those without wealth or wealth making capabilities like the homeless.

it doesn't soound lawful to send some to jail for

Address the problem now? Now that it’s grown so big that it’s almost unsolvable. Good luck with that.

Can we just give Portland to Washington and get it over with?

Who started letting people camp in Portland? The city or the county? Portland is trying to pass this off on the county. Let the city arrest and house these people or harass them until they move somewhere else.

I guess if the city wants to jail someone they better use their own jail instead of making residents outside the city pay for it. The county jail is no place for someone accused of a crime in the city. And the sheriff is right, putting someone in jail for a small citation doesn't make any sense at all.

I completely agree with this Sheriff. Arresting the homeless is no way to solve the housing crisis and that is what this situation is.

I don't blame the Sheriff. That's a lot to put on here. They're basically saying they want her to solve the housing problem, which I'm sure is very cost inefficient.

You gonna arrest them all? You don’t even have the space to keep them. I’m glad she didn’t accept them into the jail.
