For 43 years Honda’s Gold Wing has been going strong racking up billions of miles across the globe. Now after a lengthy wait its finally here. Behold: the 2018 Gold Wing. Available in both Tour and bagger designations the Gold Wing is not only Big Red’s, but perhaps the world’s, finest long-distance touring motorcycle.
Once again, a torquey 1.8-liter water-cooled flat-six powers the Gold Wing. The lighter and more compact engine is of all-new design featuring square bore/stroke measurements as well as 24-valve Unicam-equipped cylinder heads. Compression ratio has also been boosted by nearly a point.
The Horizontal-Six is claimed to be 20% more fuel effect and now drinks from a smaller 5.5-gallon fuel tank. Its mated to a six-speed manual gearbox or a fully automated seven-speed Dual-Clutch Transmission. Both setups include reverse.
A full electronics suite, including adjustable engine power modes, torque, aka traction, and cruise control as well as a convenient Hill Start Assist are all standard. Settings can be manipulated via a beautiful seven-inch color display and refined switchgear controls.
The Gold Wing rolls on a slimmer and even more mass-centralized twin-spar aluminum chassis with 18-inch front and 16-inch wheels shod in either Bridgestone or Dunlop rubber. The fork was replaced with double-wishbone front suspension that promises an even smoother ride with 40% less steering effort. Pro-Link Showa suspension returns at the rear and the suspenders benefit from electronic damping control and over four-inches of travel fore and aft.
Oversized front disc brakes are linked electronically with the rear foot brake affording this 90-pound lighter Gold Wing superior stopping capabilities.
More creature comforts come in the form of an electronically adjustable windscreen, keyless start and entry, heated seats and grips, as well as a center stand. A four-speaker stereo and integrated navigation with Bluetooth capability is also standard kit.
Still built in Japan the 2018 Gold Wing comes with a three-year warranty, with an option to extend coverage for a full eight years. MSRP climbs to $26,700 for the touring model with machines arriving in the US February, 2018. A vast line of factory engineered accessories are also available. Enough with the specs? What’s it like to ride? Stay tuned for our First Test in January.
