If you watched Amélie with subtitles, you’ll have missed the subtle things that make the characters more interesting & authentic.

If you’ve been studying French for a while, you’ve surely seen this movie at least once: Le Fabuleux Destin d’Amélie Poulain, also known as Amélie or Amélie from Montmartre. BUT if you watched it with the subtitles on, you probably missed some telling details in the conversations.

Today, I want to help you enjoy the movie on a deeper level. Let’s get behind the subtitles and really put your oral French comprehension to the test by exploring the subtleties of spoken French in the film Amélie.

Take care and stay safe.
😘 from Grenoble, France.

I always thought to myself that finally understanding Amelie without subtitles would be my graduation from French, now I know I am not even close...

That's my favorite type of videos, Géraldine! It's so fascinating to know all these nuances in French. And when you prove it through movies, I'm sold 😍 Salutations de la Pologne!

My favorite movie! I could listen to you break down this movie for hours! So good and made me think of her character a bit differently than before. I always knew she was thoughtful (obviously) but knowing these tiny details really helps frame her character even more. Merci!

More videos on different French accents would be great! I'm a French teacher and don't know all the different accents so would love to educate myself and my students more. Merci pour toutes ces vidéos excellentes !

I love these kind of lessons . There are so many YouTube channels teaching standard French but it’s rare to see anything about the «  language familiar «

This was fun! I watched this movie hundreds of times in the early 2000's! I was enthralled with the story and the acting. Thank you for giving me another reason to rewatch it.

I cannot believe it has been that long since Amelie was released! I will need to see it again. Audrey T was in every French movie at that time I think. Another, more disturbing, one was "He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not." Et, en fin, j'adore votre chaîne!

Thanks for the video, I really appreciate your videos. I love the Southern accent, especially in Grenoble. It's easy to learn and understand.

Yeah, I know Amélie. I have the film on DVD, I have the script, a music box that plays the song "J’y suis jamais allé" and I have been to the café in Paris with a French friend. Thanks so much for the video.

Fabulous film made even more interesting by your brilliant video. Thank you for sharing so much great content. This is another level of French - characterisation as well as useful vocabulary for everyday life.

Here are the few French films I have watched in my life:
1. Amélie by Jean-Pierre Jeunet
2. L'Auberge Espagnole by Cédric Klapisch
3. Paris by Cédric Klapisch
4. Bob Le Flambeur by Jean Pierre Melville
5. Caché by Michael Haneke

Not a big list I know.

I loved the video and its explanation. I'll see if you have more on accents and where they are from in other videos. I live in France and for the first year, people just sounded French but now I start to see "oh, that is a southern accent"

I enjoyed and have watched Amélie several times. I think a somewhat similar type of movie, in English, having similar subtle humor, cultural (and other) stereotypes, double-entendre, and the like, would be Stanley Kubrick's "Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb". You have to keep the ears and eyes open to catch everything. The screenwriting is just astounding.
