I don't like to travel anymore (?!) and reflecting on my travels

Let me explain...since I was a kid, I have always loved traveling. To me, it was like magic. I would dream of the places I would travel to and live abroad. I did pretty well aligning my life with travel and prioritizing that. Looking back at my travel resume, I can successfully say that the little girl who dreamt of these adventures in her room has completed her dream. But what happens when you no longer identify with those dreams, or you outgrow them, or you try to force situations to fit that version of you no longer are? I started reflecting on my travels, that traveler identity, little Ashely’s dream, and what happened since I returned from living abroad in Chile.

This is Chapter 1 of a three-part mini-series. Think of it as a pallet cleanser between series.

My wife and I have travelled a lot in the last 15 years including 7 trips to Bali and 7 weeks in the US among other countries. Our last trip was 4 months in Vietnam, Cambodia and Singapore. We are now retired and in our 60s and suddenly feel we are over international travel for good. Pre existing conditions make travel insurance a real burden now and also sitting on a plane any longer than 6 hours is totally out of the question now. We are Australian and happy to have a quiet retirement staying and holiday as domestic tourists.

I have had my fill of travel. I no longer want to go abroad.

This is how I feel, I’m no longer that person that needs to travel. I always felt that my life would be boring if I couldn’t but it’s actually peaceful and I enjoy being in my little town. ❤

I've worked in Italy and it has always brought tremendous growth, especially the work conditions which make me appreciate UK. I also travel to get away from bullying at work and my narcissistic Dad but now he's gone and I got a new job, I love Yorkshire again. I also got fired in sicily in covid and treated really badly. I have trauma now fro. how I had to escape.

I'm so happy you took time to reflect and figure out what you really want. Growth and change are inevitable and kudos to you for letting that play out as it should. Can't wait to see what's next!

Thanks for this! Im only 19, and although my dreams don't revolve around traveling, I do have dreams and paths I want to pursue which feel like desires I will always have. You've reminded me that life is long (if we're lucky), and I have plenty of time to pursue my current dreams and and for my dreams to change in ways that I can't even imagine.

I moved to Spain a few years ago which was always my dream. I had always wanted to live abroad and I also cultivated a traveler persona in my 20’s. Even though the USA is a dumpster fire right now I find myself missing home and I feel so burned out on travel. My last few trips have not been exciting and I just started wondering why I was here, what am I doing? I’m still here but I’m seriously thinking it’s time to go put roots down back home.

I haven't been able to travel in over 2 years and I'm curious if I will still experience the carefree beauty that travel brings, or if traveling will be completely different due to all the changes and restrictions. Looking forward to the next part of your journey, wherever it may be.

I swear believe me, I swear we went through the same process, same
journey. It’s mind blowing 😅 everything you’ve experienced and said resonates with me on so many levels. I was bouncing around so much throughout my 20s, you’ve hit the nail when you said you’ve created this identity travel! I’ve said that too at some point!! All this trotting around led me to burnout and having a pretty bad identity crisis which tied in with Covid. Awful time. I’m still in the process of getting my life back on track and ‘start from scratch’ but like you, I have no desire whatsoever to keep moving around. Hope you’re in a better place now!!

Loved this video. What job allowed you to travel to Kenya and Peru? Sounds amazing!

Traveling for the sake of traveling is narcissistic. There should be a purpose beyond vain glory instathot photos or tikthot compilations. Otherwise there is no point. Especially for women to travel. Artists travel. And no, not photography or videographer. That is not art
