I think I disagree about the ultimate fate of Pocahontas's people, and Malick's conclusion about them. After all, she has a son who lives. He's the future. I think Pocahontas and Rolfe's relationship is meant to show what a good encounter between unlike peoples could be, so my reading of the film's ending is more optimistic, I suppose.

I don't understand the use of "Old World" music & orchestration as background sounds for a film about the "New World". Surely there is wood-wind music that would be more appropriate and mood-setting for this other-wise excellent presentation of old world meeting new (older) world.
I just don't "get it"! PS - There never was a romantic relationship between Captain Smith and Pocahontas (she related to him as her surrogate father who left the settlement without telling her good bye).
