What Every Christian Needs to Know About Mormonism

Who are the Mormons and what do they believe? In this video, I'm going to walk through Latter-day Saints history and beliefs—explaining where Mormonism came from and the core tenants of their faith. This is Mormonism in a nutshell.

Many Christians know a little bit about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but many don't understand this faith and it's history. As a Christian living in Utah who regularly interacts with Mormons, I made this video to be a helpful guide for Christians seeking to better understand what the LDS Church teaches.

Once I make our "Deep Dive on Mormon Doctrine" video, I'll post that link here.

Just caught this mistake - at 14:39, the verse reference says "Nephi 2:22-23, " it should read "2 Nephi 2:22-23"

I must compliment you. You did a very good job on the history of the church. I was expecting extreme discourse on the church. But you were very respectful. There were some things that arent true . But mostly you were tight on . Thank you.

Just spoke to some missionaries from the LDS church on the phone today. The only way you’ll understand these people is to talk to them. They really are sweet hearts, at least on the surface, but my faith is strong, and the teachings of Joseph Smith are just too contradictory to the New Testament. I pray that these children of God return to their father, in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Former mormon here: fantastic video! You really boiled down the essential beliefs of mormonism (from a believing member's perspective) in a very factual manner. I saw nothing that was against the official narrative of the church.
On a side note, the "translation" of the Book of Mormon via a rock in a hat thing used to be considered "anti-mormon" teachings and was considered a falsehood. This is one teaching which many members might not initially believe, because they were not taught this growing up. We were instead taught that Joseph physically had the plates in front of him, and there was never a "peep stone". But the church had to change their narrative when too many reliable sources came out proving that this is what original documentation presents as the translation method.

My suggestion to my Mormon and ex-Mormon friends is for their church to finally admit the truth that the Book of Mormon and other founding documents are part of what is called “religious fiction.” As part of American history, it certainly does have literary value. Parts of these documents have been recycled from the Holy Bible while other parts are early 19th century story-telling common at the time. The history of Mormonism is both fascinating and tragic at the same time. Joseph Smith successfully turned a fictional work (a “con job”) into an organized religion which still exists to the present day. If Mormons can begin to accept that the Book of Mormon is not history or Scripture, then the healing of so many broken lives and families may begin. 😊😊😊

I’m 12:34 into this video and want to say I appreciate you for doing more than most to try and accurately represent what members of the LDS faith believe, even if you still disagree completely.

Wow. This is one of the best presentations of Latter-day Saint doctrine from a non-Latter-day Saint that I have ever seen. Kudos. I would have made a couple tweaks here and there, but I don’t want to nitpick. Thanks for doing your homework and doing your best to present our beliefs as we believe them rather than straw manning our beliefs, which is what usually happens.

This video is incredibly accurate. The sad thing is most Mormons don’t have this in-depth knowledge about their own church, or will often refute or avoid many of these claims or ideas to try and sound as neutral or normal as possible

How do they believe in a history that secular history makes no mention of? Unlike Christianity.

I had a meeting with these missionaries in South Africa..very humble and friendly but I found out that it's a false doctrine, I was purchased by the precious blood of Jesus and I cannot take any teach which is not biblically rooted.Joseph Smith did not die for any man, he also needs the grace of our Lord Jesus..Many false christs are come to the world in all races ..open your eyes

The way the JST is often quietly tucked away by Mormons has always been perplexing to me. You would think this would be one of the main talking points for the LDS Church as it would presumably present clear examples of where the “plain and precious truths” were lost from the Bible, thereby bolstering LDS claims that we need the restored text.

4:24 the hat story, although very popular amongst the non-mormon/ anti-mormon crowd is not particularly reliable in that it was a third hand account given by someone who wasn't part of the translation process. In fact, there are probably dozens of other descriptions of the translation process that didn't involve putting your head in a hat.

Paul taught that the church is founded on Prophets and Apostles...last time I checked authority to act in God's name didn't come from Bible College...

Another problem for the fiction created by Joseph Smith is his ignorance of the early centuries of Christianity. In those early centuries there was no formal canon of Scripture. The closest thing to a “Bible” would have been the Greek Septuagint. The books of the NT were being debated by the Catholic Church. The NT was formalized more or less at the Council of Rome 382, the Council of Hippo 393, and the Council of Carthage 397. Therefore, how could it have been corrupted if it had not even been canonized? What supernatural signs did Joseph perform in public view that established him as a “prophet?” 🤔

7:35 the book of Mormon does contain a lot of doctrine and clarifications in things like infant baptism, the need for baptism, the divinity of Jesus Christ. It even has the sacrament prayers. What it doesn't have are things like the degrees of glory, spirit prison/paradise. Baptism for the dead. Those are actually in the Bible. (And restored through modern Scripture)

If the Book of Mormon was supposed to provide the fullness of the gospel, then why did Joe Smith Jr have to create the Doctrine and Covenants, which were actually counter to the original 1st edition teachings of the Book of Mormon?

Mormonism today is truth is cemented not in the Book of Mormon, but in the Doctrine and Covenants that Joe Smith Jr created and even those were added to, removed, and changed over the years. Why is that?

The LDS God they believe in seems to change their mind often as seen through out the history of the LDS church, from denying blacks the priesthood to suddenly have a revelation that it was OK to give blacks the priesthood after legal issues were filed through IRS / US government that would remove the non-profit status if blacks were not afforded all the same rights as the white man.

No where in the Bible did it ever talk about race, or how God cursed a race. Mormon apologists try to point to the mark on Cain, declaring God changed his skin as the mark, but there is no proof of this in the Bible.

Joe Smith Jr became a master mason, and helped form the Nauvoo mason lodge, and shortly after this, created the temple endowment ceremony with much of the same language, oaths, signs, hand shakes, etc, that were used through out the different degrees of free masonry.

This doesn't seem to bother LDS members or the presidency at all, because they try to create a scenario that free masonry was once used in the old testament times (not found anywhere in the Bible) and thus, just another defacto ritual that was "restored" by Joe Smith Jr.

I honestly am very sad and worried for all LDS members, because I was once heavily indoctrinated in it back in the early 1980's ~ 2000's, and yet today, I find many Mormon apologists trying to refute what was taught by the LDS leadership back in those times, even though everything is recorded, written down, in their own church manuals, ensigns, and many other places.
