"All For Us (feat. Zendaya)" by Labrinth
Curated by: Mike Floeck
Genre: #electropop
The aughties have been extremely kind to Labrinth, born Timothy McKenzie. He started the decade as the first artist in six years signed by Simon Cowell to a record label without performing on a reality television competition. He’s ending the decade with several hit songs under his belt thanks to his supergroup collaboration LSD with fellow superstars Sia and Diplo - “Thunderclouds” has clocked more than 500 million streams across platforms and several songs share splintered success, broadening the audience to the least-known of these three superstars.
Better still, Labrinth was announced as the lead composer for the soundtrack to the hit HBO series ‘Euphoria’ in June and released “All For Us” - featured in the show and featuring series star Zendaya in an alternate version. “All For Us” is an exquisitely dramatic contemplation piece wrapped in a complex instrumental that blips over pitched-up vocal sample that will wind its way into your brain for good.
“All For Us” has juicier layers to reveal beneath tuned pitches and kick drums. The melody is delightfully twisted, and McKenzie is able to throw his voice from the bridge’s delicate falsetto into a final chorus that swells into an erratic grab for love. His harmonization is supreme, calling to mind the late Chris Cornell’s solo work or even some more extroverted moments from Brian Wilson. All in all, Labrinth has created an absolute maze of a song with “All For Us”, one that has zero of the typical, barely-palatable pop sheen or dishonest singer-songwriter flair attributed to soundtracks of hit shows (we’re looking at you, Game of Thrones).
