The legislative session started today with Democrats holding the largest majority in history - 69 of 100 seats. But they didn't want to talk gun control just yet.

Assault Rifles as defined by the US Military are ALREADY RESTRICTED from ownership by the vast majority of people. A true Assault Rifle has these 4 features:

1. Shoots in intermediate-sized cartridge
2. Is effective to at least 300 Meters
3. Accepts a detachable box-type magazine
4. Has selective fire capability which allows it to fire _fully_ automatic (like a machine gun).

Your average citizen already CANNOT buy an Assault Rifle. Only people with an extremely restrictive license can purchase one (like MG range owners). All this talk about folding stocks, pistol grips, and flash suppressors is just theater. Those are all features that are meant to confuse people as to what an Assault Rifle actually is. How does a "pistol grip" make a rifle more deadly? You can get off the same number of shots just as easily without it. A "folding stock" makes a gun easier to conceal? What about a pistol which doesn't have a stock at all? The fact is that almost any type of rifle, shotgun, or handgun is _potentially_ deadly - so politicians should stop pretending we will all be much safer if they ONLY ban a certain type of gun that they define as an Assault rifle (even though it's not). It's a strategy to ban a very common type of gun and then -- when a mass-shooter uses a different type of gun that is just as deadly -- they will want to ban that type... and so on until ALL guns are banned. It's like saying you can drastically cut down on the number of road deaths if we only ban all sportscars - but knowing full well you could only lower road deaths that way by banning all models and not letting anybody drive.

All this ignores the FACT that much more deadly rifles were much easier to obtain by average citizens less than a hundred years ago but these "mass-shootings" are something we've only come to fear in the last 20-30 years. The capabilities of the guns didn't change -- something _else_ changed -- and as long as we continue to blame inanimate objects for the increases in gun violence we are only ignoring the real causes of that increase.
