This is, sadly, not an uncommon thing when it comes to obsessive fans stalking their idols. They'll send letters, follow them around, take pictures, fall in love with the idea of having the idol. And when the idol doesn't notice them, they get desperate, and might eventually kill their idol. Because if they can't have them, no one else could either. This also occurs in some over-possessive relationships.
Of course, the person doesn't always kill themselves, but still.
