Spinalonga is located in the gulf of Elounda in north eastern Crete. Plaka is the closest town to the island where you can get a boat trip to Spinalonga
Spinalonga is 70 kilometers from heraklion and 15 kilometers from Agios Nikolaos. Boat trips to Spinalonga you can get also from the port of Agios Nikolaos and the port of Elounda in high season are boat trips every few minutes and in low season more rare but still enough.
The new fortress of Spinalonga was built from the Venetetians in 1579. The island became in 1903 the place where the lepers were quarantined till 1957 thats why took the name the island of pain,and are written a lot of books and are made films for the dramatic stories of the people who lived there.
