Christianity primarily lowers depression and anxiety.

My mental health was off the rails when I was a practicing pagan. I was depressed, anxious, suicidal, struggling with substance abuse, just overall out of control. God saved me and I am not that person anymore. He healed my mind and I have never been more stable in my life. It's because of Jesus. So following Him was the THE BEST thing that ever happen to me. The security and peace that He has brought me is far beyond anything the secular world has to offer

There are people who misuse religion and weaponize it to manipulate or otherwise harm others, but this is reflective of the person doing bad things not the religion itself.

When you stop listening those people, discard their false teaching and truly get to know God you discover that God is love. Pure and simple, his love has no technicalities, no conditions, no loopholes. God desires the best for us at all times and wants us to be in communion with him.

These people might not feel like religion is harmful if they knew that God isn’t an executioner, but a healer. His ways are not our ways, everything he does is out of love, as it is his nature.

Believing in God definitely makes me stronger, less anxious and self-conscious

I had a period in my life (roughly between the late 2010s up to the pandemic) where I was a pretty lukewarm Christian and hardly ever thought about God and that was one of the most hollow, soul-crushing periods of my life. I’d say that coming back from the slow fading away positively impacted my mental health.

When I didn't spend as much time in prayer and scripture reading as I do now, I was dealing with constant depression and loneliness. When I took my baptismal covenant seriously and left a relationship not good for me, and rededicated myself to God a few months back, things have gotten so much better. God bless you inspiring philosophy for your channel in the Name of the Father Son and Holy Spirit.

Coming back to Christ fixed my ongoing depression issues, that stuck around despite medical intervention.

I've had more positive results as a believer in Jesus Christ for both my mental health and emotional health. I'm more at peace and happier since I came back to Christ ✝️🥹❤️🐺

I have an anecdote for religion improving my mental health. As a teenager I struggled with severe anorexia, clinical general anxiety and major depressive disorder with psychotic tendencies. Pretty serious diagnosis that was potentially life ending and nearly was. Even as a nominal Christian at that time Jesus was all I had. Friendships were crumbling and my family was supportive but for severe mental health it wasn’t enough. Through my trust in God I made an effort towards recovery. It took years and ups and downs. Now years later I’ve been baptized, read my Bible daily, I graduated with a 4.0 summa cum lade with a degree in medical laboratory science, I have two beautiful boys, a wonderful husband and I can truly say God saved me and blessed me with all I have. Plus the actual data to suggest that those who believe in a higher power in general have higher reported rates of happiness and peace. Praise God ❤

I was raised Catholic. While I’ve had mental health issues in the past, sometimes very severe ones, they only happened while I was an Atheist.

It's true, I was contemplating harming myself and others when i was younger. But when i turned to Christ, I found true peace

Glad someone is making this a public note. Too many people assume trauma comes from religiosity but do not take into consideration or account the other factors of people's particular views that are not necessarily aligned with something religious in nature.

The only thing that harmed my mind as I grew up Christian since birth, was most probably secular tv and media, especially horror movies

Alright, I know many religious teens, and the ones that show the most anxiety, gender confusion, and mood swings are the non-religious ones. I’m not saying all the non-religious are weird, mostly all normal people but I’m just saying in my experience I’ve seen that.

I know religious traumas from bad leaders and fundamentalist parents happen, but the claim that many children have bad mental health for going to church and knowing about hell is garbage. All the toddlers I see aren’t terrified about going to hell, they are doing little prayers.

I think it’s odd that, throughout all of history, throughout all of civilization, there has been some sort of a belief in a higher power, which it’s seemed to be a benefit to us, and only a problem now.

I am a young depressive man, and i can GUARANTEE, if i wasn't raised christian, if i never heard the gospel, i would probably lose the fight a looong time ago

It seems to go in both directions:
"Religious beliefs, practices, and coping may increase the prevalence of anxiety through the induction of guilt and fear. On the other hand, religious beliefs may provide solace to those who are fearful and anxious."
