Rebuilding a 1940 Hercus Lathe - Part 1

Rebuilding and restoring a circa 1940 Hercus Aussie made lathe, part #1.
This lathe dates back to around an estimated 1940 (some say even back to 1936) and has been used in industry for half of that time. I was given this by my father around 15 years ago who purchased it on his retirement from the company that we both worked for in 1986 for $5.
Old and sad, this lathe has seen better days and is well overdue for a spruce up... this is the saga of the refurb and in part 1, the teardown takes place, getting ready for a little jazzing up.
Stay tuned for part 2, subscribe and like and keep up with the rebuild as it happens!

What's in Part 1? - Here is the strip down of all the parts, a little bit of cleaning and a whole lot of head scratching (in other words, me proving to the world I have no idea what I'm doing!)

Hope you enjoy, thanks for watching...

Glad another Aussie showing lathe repair etc. Many similarities with my 1956 premo.

It looks like it was designed before the evil empire invented built-in obsolescence.
Glad that in the year 2019, year of the Australian Royal Commission into Aged Health Care Homes and elder abuse, this Hercus is still alive.
Congratulations. Thanks for the upload and the atmospheric intro.
I have one of the later V-bed models, from 1946, making it older than me.
The 1946 version weighs about 180kg, and I wonder how much the one shown here weighs ?
May the torque be with you.

I own a German Burchhardt lathe from the 1950's. I'm looking for the operations manual. Can someone help me? I live in Brazil.
