Talk for primary science – Stories

Exploratory talk in science helps children develop their enquiry and reasoning skills.

Stories capture children’s attention and can generate strong emotional responses. Empathising with the characters motivates children to try to solve the problems presented in the story. Stories can relate to children’s experience or present imaginary situations completely outside their experience. Both of these create a context and purpose for children’s talk in science.

In this video, children discuss changes in materials by mixing their own ‘dream’, inspired by a story from Roald Dahl’s book The BFG.
