General Motors is making a new round of upgrades to its Fort Wayne Assembly plant to further increase production of the all-new Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 pickups – especially crew cab models.

“We are building Chevrolet and GMC crew cab pickups at record volume and mix levels to meet customer demand and the $24 million investment will allow us to build even more,” said Mary Barra, GM chairman and CEO. “The team here at Fort Wayne has done an outstanding job helping us satisfy customers throughout this launch. Our product ramp-up was very smooth and the quality has been exceptional. Crew cab sales have been very strong, and we are expanding customer choice with new models, more cab choices and innovative new powertrains.”

Combined sales of the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 crew cab pickups, which launched in the second half of 2018, were up 20 percent in the first quarter of 2019 versus a year ago. GM is projecting another significant increase for the second quarter. Customer deliveries of the double-cab models built in Fort Wayne began during the first quarter.

The $24 million will be invested to further enhance the plant’s conveyors and other tooling to support the increased production. The work will be completed this summer. With today’s announcement, GM has invested more than $1.2 billion in the plant since 2015.

Since 2009, GM has invested $23 billion in U.S. manufacturing – more than one-quarter of every dollar spent by automakers.

I have a 2013 Silverado extended cab with a Dura Max made at Ft. Wayne. Other than a recall for the heater assembly in the DEF tank which GM fixed under warranty, I have had zero issues with my pick up. I realize it is hardly broken in at 120, 000 miles but its been great so far. I"m sure it will be humming along at 250K. Always wanted to thank the folks who made my truck. If one of the folks who work at Ft. Wayne reads this, Thanks. Go GM. Go UAW. Go America.

I have worked for a GM stamping and assemblies supplier for over a decade. It was awesome to watch the video and be able to see where some of our parts go on the vehicle.

Man oh man. I installed some of the first Ethernet Back Bone cable, in this plant while it was under construction. I worked for Digital Equipment Corporation, as an installer. My Sliverado comes from the same plant. If you have never been in an assembly plant, and see how it works you have missed a sight to be sure. I pass this plant, south west of Fort Wayne, on my way to INDY, every Labor Day weekend, on the way to the U.S. Nationals. I think about that every time. WOW!

I transferred to this plant in 1986 from Wisconsin plant and built the first truck. I retired from there in 2007, great place to work!

My dad worked here in 1987-88. Really enjoyed the people and the fairly new plant at the time. Got in at Chrysler Kokomo in 1988. A lot shorter drive for him!

Best vehicle I ever had was a 2003 Yukon. I drove it 14 years, 186, 000 miles mostly in the Florida Keys and sold it for good money! One repair only, the fuel pump!

There's a heck of lot more to it than what the video shows. I'd love to see the full version.

What a masterpiece video, it's good / neat to see how it all comes together at the GM Fort Wayne, Indiana truck assembly plant, & it's all in full effect/ action! wow... Those robots are phenomenal, working hand n hand on one Accord, I love the windshield robots though! matter of fact the whole assembly process is a thing of beauty to watch, add in the human touch, and it really makes it special, totally amazing! my 1995 Chevy Silverado reg. cab stepside which I still drive today in 2020, with 241, 754 miles, was built at that plant, in May of '95, thanks for sharing the video.✌👍👍

My 2012 2500HD was built here. It just turned 100K, and it has held up well. I’ve had no problems.I give you guys on the line credit for this.

My family is a GM family. They all worked at the New Departure Hyatt bearing plant in Bristol, CT.

When I was a student and worked at GM for the summer and still worked at my PT job in a grocery store 21 hrs/wk, I worked in Parts & Service, then Security, then the Truck Plant all in Oshawa before getting into IT at GM.
