Three-Dimensional Coordinates and the Right-Hand Rule

We've done tons of stuff with the coordinate plane, but that depicts only two spatial dimensions. We experience the world in three spatial dimensions, so sometimes we will need to communicate coordinates in three-dimensional space. Let's look at some rules regarding this system, and a few handy tricks!

for anyone confused think of it as the cross that xy plane forms as lying down possibly taking a nap and go from the center up towards the sky

The derivation of Distance P1P2 appears to have skipped a step in the triangle solutions. The final solution is correct but the step of calculating P1B is missing. Perhaps that step is intuitive but a student may miss that step.

Here are my thoughts:

(P1P2)^2=(P1B)^2+(P2B)^2
(P1B)^2=(P1A)^2+(AB)^2

Hope this helps someone that may be a slow learner like me.

another way to explain the right-hand rule which i found to be clearer: open your right palm, point your thumb to +ve x axis direction and all other fingers to +ve y direction. then the inside of your palm will be showing the +ve z direction.

4:26 Finally I got the diagram one knows how happy I am after understanding that diagram and trying to derive the formula by myself...

Thanks to my teacher and ofcourse to Prof Dave too.

At 3:25, your graph mysteriously flips to have the Z axis be vertical, with no explanation as to why that’s the standard for coordinates in 3 dimensional space

I like this convention for 3D space -- the XY axes are in the familiar position on the board (as you're seeing it on a chalkboard or giant screen), and the Z points toward the viewer; the Z-Layer in HTML is also higher positive numbers = closer to the viewer (and the axis in red like an arrow pointing at you = danger). X in blue like the horizon, and Y in green like a tree growing upwards. I'm learning calculus and sometimes there are other rotations (XY on the surface like a flat sheet of paper with the Z extending upward off the page) also works, but there are other depictions that don't seem nearly as intuitive.

My error in making the post about the derivation of distance P1P2. The video is complete in its explanation of the steps to derive the distance P1P2. My mistake was made in stopping the video to write down the equations. By doing so, I totally missed the second step. My apologies for this error. I should have watched the video again before submitting a comment. Possibly I would have caught my error. Lessened learned.

I learned this one way in college for clinical purposes but now I’m doing 3d design and am confused if it’s the same. What is UP? X? or Z? I think of it as x, y, z up, forward, side. But apparently it’s x forward, y side and Z up?

The Right Hand Rule is about X-Y-Z (3-D) for the Coordinate Measuring Machine. Thanks!

1:50 a bit hard to replicate that image in real life without hurting my wrist, but doable :P
