On many occasions, I've showed up to muddy cornfields or river bottoms that were flooded and full of mallards 24 hours earlier. The sinking feeling of hitting dry ground on the way to your spot is terribly deflating. I learned to mentally mark water levels where I wanted to hunt and how they compared to water at or near the launch or parking lot. Then I could gauge how much the water level had changed before spending an hour or two packing in.

Good tips on where and how to find birds. Also, keep a duck hunting journal and log as much info as you can; wind, rain, sun, temp, etc but especially water depths for accessing areas. Add pics too if possible. There’s some good apps available to help

I like the Easter egg you put in there of Matthew 6:26. Yes, I had to immediately stop and look it up. I never thought about the crest moving like you explained it. Makes perfect sense but never dawned on me like that. Just go ahead and start jotting down notes to write a book on what it’s like to be a bird brain. (Calm down people. That’s a compliment)

Headwater or a small backwater by far my favorite to shoot ducks in. Just enough for new birds to come in the area but not to much to where they are just scattered.
